Invisible Island in the Pacific Ocean 🏝️ The Great Pacific Garbage Patch 🤯

Did you know there’s a massive ""island"" in the Pacific Ocean that isn’t on any map? That’s because it’s not land—it’s a floating trash vortex made up of millions of tons of plastic! 🏝️ The Great Pacific Garbage Patch, located between California and Hawaii, is a swirling mass of waste spanning 617,000 square miles—larger than France, Germany, and Spain combined! 😲 But that’s not all—there are at least five other similar zones polluting our oceans. This plastic soup is made up of discarded bottles, fishing nets, and containers that break down into microplastics, contaminating marine life and even entering the food chain. 🌍🐟 Meanwhile, powerful ocean currents trap the debris, making it nearly impossible to clean up as the patch continues to grow every year. And here’s the scariest part—scientists say these floating patches are only a fraction of the plastic in our oceans. Most of it sinks to the seafloor or washes up on shores. 😨

I am a former cook on ocean going vessels. I can confirm that I've seen with my own eyes the trash islands in the Pacific ocean. It is truly sad.😢

Corporate companies also dump chemicals into bodies of water because the fines are cheaper than proper disposal of them. Truly sad.

Inventing Plastic is a gift for humanity but a curse for ecology.

I learned this while i was in school and American oceanographer Charles Moore first encountered the garbage patch also known as trash island in 1997 when returning to California after finishing the Los Angeles to Hawaii trans-back yacht race and reported that it took him seven full days to cross it twenty years later and this monstrosity measures around 1.6 million square kilometers and contains approximately 80 000 tons of plastic that’s over twice the size of Texas.

Instead of going to Mars we should fix this

Apparently, now there’s a marine bacteria that’s evolved to eat plastic.

Cleaning up plastic waste is important & the efforts are commendable, but it’s like mopping the floor while the tap is still running. We need to hold manufacturers accountable and push for sustainable alternatives, or we’ll be stuck in an endless cycle of cleanup.

Oh wow. I was aware of this issue, but I didn't quite have any idea how large it was. Putting an area on it really show the enormity of the problem.

If this doesn’t make you question your habits, nothing will. Wow. I just got how serious this issue is. Thank you.

We need to support innovation... there a guy turning plastic to fuel right now!... this is gold.

We need to see his vision, support it and do better.

There is no "garbage island" in the great pacific garbage patch, It's more of a garbage soup like you said. This is why it's not visible from space, hell even if you take boats there you will not see an island of garbage, instead you will see scattered plastic everywhere.

How do I know this? By watching the ocean cleanup channel. The ocean cleanup is a non-profit company that's actually cleaning it up. They have done by far the most research on the topic on top of actually physically being there collecting the trash. They have stated in many videos that there is no "garbage island." They describe it as soup, which makes it harder to clean up, but they're still doing it.

They have also created and installed many interceptors in rivers to stop more garbage from entering the oceans since that's where most of it comes from. An interested fact that they have discovered is that only 0.5% of plastic production ends up in the ocean, so it's much less than people think.

So if anyone doesn't know: Micro-plastic is not good for humans to eat.

It's not about investing in outer space missions, it's just that we need to bring about our focus to the present condition of Earth.

Its not really a garbage patch, its just an area in the ocean where small particles of trash are more prevalent

I like the irony of people being worried about earth and then proceed to drink from plastic bottles😭🙏
