Amazing shots bro! I’m so excited to start trying this out with my own unit! Don’t think I can capture this level of stunning skylines and vistas as this though 😅 Keep it up!

99.9% of iPhone users will not be using this feature, much less need it currently. It's partially the reason I opted for the base 128GB version (don't need much local storage for my needs). 1 Minute of 4K footage is about 6 GB, not only is that a lot but the worse issue is getting it off the phone. You're going to spend a good 45min to an hour trying to get off 15 minutes of footage to edit. For average users, just not practical.
Who's it for? it's really targeted for content creators who can use the format to splice in with their normally edited/graded content. Maybe need to take some footage in tight space or on the go or something. Even then it's not practical at 4k due to crappy lightening port. One of those features you can fool around with once or twice and that's about it.
Maybe if they finally update to USB-C next gen and higher GB versions get cheaper, It'll be worth it in the future.

ProRes will allow professional content creators to colour grade for SDR and an HDR workflows H264 and H265 are not acquisition Codecs. Long GOP colour files can fall apart when stretched too far I.e. gradation stepping becomes apparent. Additionally ProRes is less computationally intensive on a timeline for any given edit suite. But you might say…”I’ve got a MacBook Pro Max.” Well The single best thing you can do to increase your ability to edit faster is to use an acquisition codec like ProRes which is not as compressed and makes it easier and much faster for the computer to work with and render.

footage looks nice... some people complain about the file size.... so do just like you would if you are shooting with a Blackmagic 6K Pro... you use a 1tb SSD for the footage.... I just tried this last night.... iphone 13pro max... use the USB adapter... plug in the Samsung T5 SSD card... After you shoot the footage you open the " file " app then from the pictures app you send the footage to the file app and it will load the footage to the T5 SSD.... now you just plug the T5 into your computer for Davinci editing... works perfectly.. also... you can shoot two different ProRes formats.... with the Iphone 13Pro it will shoot ProRes HDR and if you use the App called Filmic Pro you can shoot in just ProRes or 10bit Log.... the 10 bit log footage colors very well in Davinci.... latter, good luck

For working content creators this is a GREAT feature. ProRes is an amazing option to have on a mobile phone. For everyone else, its not going to make much of a difference.

Dunno if I can tell the difference between HEVC vs Prores in just this video, but with my 13 Pro Max, I can certainly see where the difference emerge. From what I can see, prores retains a lot of the smaller grainy details where as the default HEVC carefully smudges the finer details. This is most notable if you take noisy video. Like you said, prores is really only if you intend to edit/composite the footage. The benefits of prores only apply in a production pipeline, and the slight visual improvement vs the massive file sizes makes it impractical for videos you just want to snap and share.

I found the low light footage tests that I did to be rather disappointing, I did think ProRes would be a noticeable winner there. It's a nice to have at the moment but does set up a bright future for mobile film-making down the line. With larger cheaper storage, and faster transfer speeds more people will use ProRes more. Nice walk through!

Thanks for this great video. Just watching it again as I just bought an iPhone 13 Pro Max, upgrading from my iPhone 12 Pro Max. As I knew when I first watched this it's one of the best videos in relation to Apple ProRes. You did a great job. Been doing some research on transferring the ProRes files off my phone. I'll see which one works best. Hey Apple! Put a UCB-C port on the iPhone!

One of the best videos I have seen done, on this topic, and I cannot even put into words just how immensely I appreciate it. Absolutely beyond belief-level, comprehensive production quality.

Nice video, well done and concise! When comparing visually, you can see a difference between ProRes and camera standard, if you take the time. It's packing more information into the file, hence the larger size with a wider gamut. Great for grading. But you're right. The average grab shooter probably won't use it on a day-to-day basis.

Really useful video. I naively thought I would upgrade for prores but like you said, the trade offs don’t exactly seem worth it.. thanks for taking time to make this video 🙌🏽

Just updated my XS Max to the new 13 Pro Max 1TB, now for the two week wait until it arrives. Great Video Cheers from Western Australia 🇦🇺 ✌🏻

Thanks mate! Yeah, not a huge leap in quality. What I notice is ProRes shots seem to carry more volume and three dimensional rendering, if that's a thing. Objects separate better and have more volume. Once you see it, you realize that that is the difference, not necessarily the pixel or artifact count.

been using Prores since the developer beta release. with some basic color adjustments it looks super sharp for my daily vlogs. Only thing i wish was 4k60. my dogs love playing and 30 fps just isn't great for that.

Switched from my Galaxy S10+ to the iPhone 13 Pro and I am so glad I did. I am never going back to Android ever again. The fluidity of ios is unmatched! 120hz display feels so good to use on it. The way ios is optimised is really amazing. Who cares about customization that you get on Android phones. I will not at all miss my Samsung galaxy. The pro is totally worth the price (and the long delivery wait times). Highly recommended!

I'm recording "HD 30" video -- and I guess sometimes it switches to 1280x720... because maybe I'm trying a canted angle to begin with etc. Any idea how to lock it to only record horizontal? Or is that something you have to have a 3rd part app for?

Great video, thanks for sharing! I think the biggest difference with ProRes footage would be it's flexibility to be color graded. I am not a "content creator", but I like making vacation videos with GoPros, Drones, etc. I could see myself wanting to use ProRes only for when I know I will be creating a compilation video. It would have been interesting to see how the default video & the ProRes video reacted to light, medium, and heavy color grading. I doubt either file could be manipulated THAT much before it's such a small sensor, but I would expect very little image degradation for light & medium color grading on the ProRes video vs. regular.

I tell you the difference between Prores and standard iPhone camera, on Normal camera it will focus on sharpness more, where prores will provide more detailed view with less sharpness like professional cameras 🎥, some people also prefer using filmic pro which brings out the best out of camera results, anyone into iPhone shooting 🎥, definitely he should switch to 256gb 512gb 1 tb storage devices, more space more better it will be 💁🏼, I heard some people made Hollywood movie using iPhone 5s on filmic pro, that’s amazing, I think we have what we all need to do anything creative ideas, what else do we need 💁🏼

Is 4K 30fps ProRes better than 4K 60fps for lots of movement? Like a snowboarding film?
