Drummers LOVE their snare drums. Some drummers will even set up 2-3 snares on their kit to have all kinds of different sonic options. We’ve always wondered, what would it be like if we turned a whole drumkit into snare drums? Like, actually make the toms, and kick SNARE DRUMS!!!!!! Today on The Drum Department, we’ve actually modified an entire drumkit into snare drums! Check out what this crazy kit sounds like, and how we did it!

The only thing missing is sizzlers for all the cymbals. Oh, and gotta have more snowbell! Oh, and some snympanis, snongos, snongas, and some snimbales.

That 10" sounds so good! Trips me out everytime he hit it and it sounded like a snare. Bazaar but really cool!

I’m 65 years old and I’m never heard an own time better groove that Jarrett played. I can say they sound better when they’re played with a track.

From the moment I heard this mentioned I was so hooked. Shit sounds way way WAY better than I'd have bet on and now I'm curious about all the imaginable potential this idea leads twords

I'm genuinely considering buying a whole kit specifically to modify just like this. I think I'd use standard wires for the bass, regardless of size, and just extend the snare strings and center the coiled snare on the head. That would be plenty. Definitely something to experiment with.

I think this was an amazing idea, and if I owned a drum company, I'd make this a production option. I was shocked at how great the whole thing sounded. With a little planning, I think the fit and finish could be a bit more polished here and there, but I may need to do this.

Since I'd be going all in, I think I'd go bigger too. I'm thinking a 7 piece Tama Superstar Classic or something along those lines. A serious kit, not just a novelty to hop on and show someone every 6 months. "Hey, check this out." Something you'd sit down and play regularly and record with. This is going to require some time and patience.

I did this years ago.
Sometimes the music calls for it. It's a riot!

there is a shortcut to this. get the LP sound enhancer "snare". put a snare hazy head on the botom of your tom. put the snare enhancer on the botom hoop(maybe secure it with some tape). i like to use a singleply top head like on my regular snare and a dampening ring. works great for fat sounds, no drilling, cuting or messing with bearing edges.

I just did the same thing to one of my 14"floor toms. The snom is a great addition to mix things up!

The irony is the main snare sounded by far the worst, was like something off St. Anger

I’ll vouch for Meinl sticks, they are really nice. I’ve been playing their hybrid 5A in hickory and maple.

Yes! I had this idea not too long ago and was wondering what it would sound like if one were to put snare wires on the toms. I didn't think about the bass drum, though. It's great to see that 22 inch snare wires are actually being produced. What I would really like you to try is record a fast metal song with this kit with all the snare wires turned on. I'm curious whether the toms and the bass drum would stand out in a dense metal mix with lots of distorted guitars. Because now all the drums have distortion, too! That should give them some extra high frequency information and make them easier to hear. But maybe it is the opposite and you can't distinguish the drums from the guitars because everything is just a big mess of distortion. Please try it out, Drumeo!
