I've read this book to my 3rd-5th graders every year the past 9 years. It's our 3rd read aloud of the school year (prior to this book we read Because of Winn Dixie also by the same author). This book is full of symbolism as well as simile and challenges the students to hone in on growing their inferencing skills. Every year they cry at the end. We then reference this book and it's elements to help us not only learn and grow as readers/thinkers but as human beings too. Read the book

This was one of my favorite books as a teenager. When I saw the movie I wondered if Rob’s rash would go away when he finished grieving his mother. I was not surprised that it did! My wrists get red, dry, itchy, split and peeling when something is haunting me but once I surrender it to God and fate and focus on my blessings, it goes away. And sometimes it really does come and go away in seconds just like Rob! Also, I love to draw and paint although I have very little time for it and I often think about how I’m going to do it, while I’m at work so I can definitely relate to Rob in that.

If you're a kid watching this you're gonna want the kids to succeed in releasing a tiger out into the woods.
But as an adult you're more like "NO! Releasing a 600 pound big cat into the forest is a REALLY BAD AND STUPID IDEA! The best thing you can do for him at that point is getting him away from that man who keeps him in a tiny cage and getting him into a spacious big cat sanctuary."

Loved this book as a kid. I remember choosing it because of the cover art. I never forgot it.
