Seeing the smoke from the native Patagonian Selk'nam fires, the first Europeans who visited named this the Land of Fire, or Tierra del Fuego.

The Selk'nam, were wiped out by Europeans in the 19th century when gold was found in Patagonia, and when sheep herding became big business here. Julius Popper, infamous in Patagonia, lead the manhunts, bringing back Selk'nam ears for bounty.

Today, almost no Selk'nam remain, and only one living man (Joubert Yanten Gonez, or Yekuk) speaks their Chon language.
