Why do Cats Slap?

Opinions:

1. I imagine they're just touching it to see what it does. Like kids poking weird stuff with sticks.

2. I'm guessing mainly to see if it is a living thing or not and how dangerous it is if it is a living thing.

3. If it jumps, it's an animal to be eaten. If it doesn't it's an inanimate object. Something like that?

4. My moms cat was doing this to a pile of towels. So I the next time he tried to touch the towels, I pushed them towards him with a stick and the poor cat ran.
