Well, this is a way to end your game quicker if you don't reach this level on time. There is an invisible timer that counts down, and when the timer hits zero, the gate will close, rendering the goal unreachable. Therefore, you are forced to commit suicide by either going back to space or stepping on the spike, the latter is more widely known but slower.
