You don't have to understand the rules of good practice in order to see the results in applications, that's why we have experimental science, so if there's an extensive library of good results for obedience to the rules, there's no excuse for ignoring good practice and "don't criticize what you don't understand".

Professor Sapolsky's research confirms that even animals follow hidden rules of behaviour that can only be recognized by statistical evidence. A critique of the the methodology and conclusions of the researchers is usually a matter of clarifying the issues around innate bias, (mostly of the critic, because the researchers don't get funded to invent the narrative). It's never been the job of practical science to debunk the narrative, but it shouldn't be necessary to constantly defend against bunkum either.
