Mixing two vocal tracks?

Mixing two vocal tracks?
Today's question is about mixing a vocal track with another vocal track. A viewer wants to know if it's possible and if I have any tips.
- I you want to make a transition from one vocal track to the next you need to look at the structure of the songs. Most songs will start with music (a beat) and after that you will get verses and hooks (chorus). In order to make a clean transition you match the beats and find the right point for the transition.
The most logical option is to start your transition when the hook begins. So at that point you add the beginning of the second song where the track is still just beats. This way the vocals of the two songs are not playing at the same time. I will demonstrate this in one of the upcoming editions of the Mix Tutorial series.
- If you want to have two songs with vocals playing at the same time it's going to be a different story. In most cases this will NOT sound good. The vocals will clash, even if the beats are in sync.
To make this work you would have to find two songs that are in the same key to increase the chance that the vocals are in the same range as well (if you are using singing vocals). Rap vocals will be even harder to blend because it will always sound a bit chaotic.
Next you will have to use the EQ to try and make sure that the two vocals are not in the same frequency. Give them their own space. Also adjust the volume to make one vocal more of a background vocal and the other one more in the front (louder).
Even with all these adjustments it might still sound bad, but it could be fun to experiment at home ;)
