The fact that they are permitted to fly over military bases and aren't identifiable should tell you all you need to know. They're either military assets, or they're a can of worms the military doesn't want to open.

A few points not mentioned.
1) In the US, all drones over 250g (0.55oz) are required to be registered and have RemoteID, . which can be checked with a cellphone
2) Drones are not permitted to be used beyond line of sight or at night without permission.
3) Based on the close up - this doesn't look like a common retail drone like DJI.

Ive seen them here in southern vermont last winter. 4 to 5 in a cluster. Very strange...

We saw 5 of them over Virginia Beach Naval Air Station Oceana last night, the biggest Naval jet port in the world!!! They were flying around it for hours with one hovering above shining weird lights. There were NO OTHER AIRCRAFT flying. Could it be the government doesn't know what they are??? If any civilian flew our little doinky drone over Oceana, we would be sent to prison ASAP!

They've been seen around military bases in England and Germany for at least 2 months. This isn't just about New Jersey.

Military drones flashing a bunch of lights that can be seen from a long way off? If so, the military totally sucks at being clandestine no matter where they’re flying them.

Of course with all the hype, two things are happening simultaneously.
1. Any panicky Karen who sees a plane or bird, is going to report it as a drone.
2. Any teen or joker with a drone is going to fly it in circles every night.
