This extraordinary programme follows the frontline forces at a purpose-built military town on the outskirts of Kandahar in Afghanistan, where 14,000 men and women live in perhaps the world's most dangerous Warzone. The Kandahar airbase is a key facility run by the British on behalf of NATO, and the Royal Air Force has an 800-strong presence there. The RAF is the most technologically advanced of all the forces and here it is pushed to the limit. While luxuries are few and far between, keeping a base running smoothly in the middle of a desert is a challenge in itself.

This film was first broadcast: 2009

Love this series. I'm a 100% disabled female veteran from the Vietnam Eta. At that time, enlisted women had 2 choices: clerical or medical fields. Quite a change for women today. I applaud eac and every woman and man who have served their homelands through NATO.

Thanks for sharing this show, its actually really good seeing our troops behind the scenes even tho we know the outcome in Afghanistan. Feel so bad for all those we lost for what?? America started a war on a weak Taliban and left with them being stronger than ever.🤦🏽‍♂💔💯🙏🏽

I still find this very hard to watch, even though over a decade has past.
The only way I can describe it, as though someone is pulling the stitches of a wound.

Globally we have the 6th largest defemce budget.
People wondering why we have so little.
Because we spent so much on global policing and bases.
