I bought the Surge 116 SW and added 5 grams of tungsten tape at the throat. Surge was consistent on drops, resets, and dinks. I felt like I could keep the ball in much more than the Azul when driving the ball. I may add even a little more tungsten. I want to see if I can get the ball a tad deeper on my serve and see if I can add a few more rpms.

what was the swing weight of your paddle, and did you otherwise weight it up with weighted tape?

Interesting. Do you really think the Surge is more stiff than the Azul? If I’m not mistaken, the Azul (which I own) has 4 layers of CF/Kevlar blend which is why it has been recognized as a power paddle since its release. And it’s also the reason it was different from other iterations using the same face material, which were traditionally on the control/plush side of the spectrum. John Kew even put it (the Azul) in the 90th percentile for pop. I had to put 6 grams of lead in the throat on each side just to soften it up because I didn’t like the way it played stock. I was gonna get the surge but now I’m hesitant because I don’t want something more stiff than the Azul 😬

I have the Azul, which I LOVE and I was very curious about this one. I really want a trainer paddle but have been toying with getting a PKOLL spoon instead.

Great Review Brian as always. Just got a hold of a Gen 3 Joola CJ 16mm Scorpeus. Thanks to your review my friend. Wanted to get one, before they are gone. What are you using now ? The Ruby, the Azul, the Shapeshifter ? Saludos from Panama. Have a wonderful rest of the summer.

How would you compare it to the vatic pro flash?

I haven’t notice much of a difference between the azul and the surge. The azul is just a little softer. Power spin and control were very similar

I bought one not sure why. I’ll play with it this weekend. Main paddle lately has been J2k

Wow you’re saying it has more pop than the Azul? Azul has a freakish amount of pop to me, I think it’s also 90+ percentile on JonnyK’s database.
