Home Run? Single? Out? Cody Bellinger has confusing hit for Dodgers!

Dodgers star Cody Bellinger got ahold of one, and thought it was a home run. Unfortunately, it did not leave the park, and was only a single. Since he passed Justin Turner on the basepaths while it happened, he was called out!

Rule context for the people who think Cody deserves a homer:

You cannot give a player a homerun till they have crossed all 4 bags legally (rule 5.05(a)(5). By passing Turner it is deemed illegal so the homerun does not count (rule 5.09(b)(9).

This is fair and the correct ruling by the umpires.

Seems like things are still normal when it comes to ⚾.

notice at 1:13 Tapia dekes and tries to make the runner think he caught the ball. im not sure if this rule was in his mind when he did that but it sure fooled turner and his deke was the reason this happened the way it did. so in a sense he took a homer away by dropping it over the fence crazy. you will likely never see this scenario again.

I have been thinking a lot about this play since it happened - especially since I lost a bet on the Dodgers. The confusing part is Bellinger is essentially standing still when Turner ran back to first base. So Bellinger didn't pass Turner - Turner passed Bellinger as Turner ran back to first base. I initially thought it would be Turner who would be called out. But as per the rules, when two runners pass each other, it is the trail runner who is called out - so the umpires got it right. What Bellinger COULD have done if he realized Turner was bent on getting back to first base is go into full retreat mode himself - run back to first base and then just keep running back toward home plate - and let Turner have first base - then Turner would realize the ball is in the left field seats for a homerun - and Turner and Bellinger could have then gone into a homerun trot and both runs would score. But I am sure Bellinger didn't have time to figure out why Turner was even running the wrong way. I haven't seen a play like this since Little League.

This is what you get for running with your head down 😣

I have never seen that before. Turner thought that the ball was caught and didn't want to be doubled off. It got confusing after Turner went back to first base.

Stearns is probably happy he didn't get Turner after that. Especially after the Opening Day Shaw had...

He filled up a stat sheet in one at bat

If a runner passes another runner the runner that passes is out. Turner would score on the home run Bellinger would get a single with a run batted in

That is on Justin Turner, who ran back to first!

Unusual play but also a little but surprising it doesn't happen more often. Tapia even thought he had caught it and reached into his glove to make the throw which is what would have made Turner run back. Mistakenly thinking a ball was caught when it wasn't seems like a pretty easy error to make and once you are running back your focus would 100% be on beating the throw so you wouldn't really pay attention to anything else. Could an OF deliberately fake a catch and throw or would that be illegal?

"It did not leave the park"? Yes, it did. It's scored a single and an out since he passed Turner between first and second. Well, Turner passed him retreating, but by rule Bellinger passed Turner and is out.
