Rare 1855-O Type 2 gold dollar arrives from Jon Blyth

The elusive type 2 gold dollar with the small indian head is often missing from type sets and can be expensive and tough to track down. In 1855 for a year the smaller indian head was minted but the strike was very weak and the date often uneven. In full MS condition the 1855-O can sell for up to $65,000 and even in bad condition can be over $1,200 so a nice details grade coin is a good way of getting hold of one of these elusive coins.

The mintage on this is 55,000 and there are estimated to be 500 or so gradeable survivors and a few more details grade coins. I believe that the 1911-D is also around the 55,000 mark and the 1856 Upright 5. These mintages compare with many millions for larger USA pre-33 coins!

You have been my very favorite YouTube channel for some time now. Congrats on the type 2. That, and the $3 are the only coins I "need" to complete my type set. Some say it's quite complete as it is. But I tell videos are beyond inspirational to me. I absolutely LOVE, and respect the fact that, as a Brit, you have such a deep appreciation (as do I) for pre-33 US Gold. I love all the US gold one dollar coins! Love historical gold but that slab with the word "tooled" on it makes me cringe! The number of perspective buyers will greatly decrease because of that nasty word. I would break it out of that slab and set it free! Great coin... horrid slab!
