Hosts Alicia Malone (TCM) and Tom Meyers (The Bowery Boys) examine New York City hierarchy in the Gilded Age and the social constructs that go along with it. They react to the introduction of the Russell and the Van Rhijn families and how the series reflects 1800s New York. In part two, creator, writer and producer Lord Julian Fellowes joins the podcast along with Christine Baranski (Agnes Van Rhijn) to talk about creating the vision for the show and bringing Aunt Agnes to life. Watch The Gilded Age on HBO Max, and subscribe to The Official Gilded Age Podcast so you don’t miss an episode.

Julian Fellows can continue to "ram" history down my throat anytime. I so enjoyed this 1st episode of the Guilded Age.

As someone who has Dutch and English ancestors who lived in pre Revolutionary NY it's interesting to me to see how these families continued after my lines broke off. I am impressed by how well Julian has researched all of this and I'm hoping that we get a visit from some of our favorite Downton Abbey Americans

Also the "Dollar Princesses" were during this time who married into the British Aristocratic family. The money saved some of the historic estate homes. It's interesting.

At the time of writing this I have watched season 1 and half of season 2 I've finally found a podcast that is a passionate about this magnificent show as I am. So I've gone right back to the beginning of your podcasts to listen to them all. Also to show my support for the show as some critics were slating it and calling it boring, what do these so called critics know, how about asking the audience what we think! I love it and cant wait for season 3, 4, 5 etc .

Is this what a funeral is? "It wasn't worth such a long journey just to make sure Henry was dead". Epic! Love Aunt Agnes.

Would be nice to see a younger Martha Levinson mother of Cora crawly from downton abbey. Cora was born in the 1860s she would be 14 in 1882. so would be nice to see a cameo of the younger Martha character with her teen daughter.

As a former guide at Newport’s Breakers I think I noticed the Music Room with its beautiful blue marble fireplaces! Upcoming preview showed the Breakers Billiard Rolm.😊

I watched this Series from the beginning, it's very good. I'm especially interested in the African American lifestyles and old money vs new money, really interesting....

Notice when Miss Scott came to dinner how the working class immigrants responded? This country is aweful from start to finish. Those ladies were SERVANTS but felt the need to exude superiority. The nerve. We are neither greater than or better than anyone. To the Miss Scott’s of the world, they fear you because of your greatness.

Just a correction for the host: Christine Baranski did not say she herself was descended from the Drexel family. She said her late husband was the grandson of old-NYC society lady Elizabeth Drexel Lehr.

Please, everyone, if you can ever...please visit Newport. As a Rhode Islander, I can attest to the fact that they are glorious. Several scenes are shot in the "cottages".

I really enjoy the podcast after seeing all episodes of this fantastic series! What I find especially interesting is the position of black people and the black elite that was also present in that age, a fact I didn't know anything about. Thanks for educating us!

Very much enjoyed the first episode. Casting, writing, acting, direction, sets and costumes certainly don't disappoint. One of my grips about period production is when they play fast and loose with historical events. History as it happened is fascinating and entertaining enough without the need to take artistic license to make a story "better". Given how well Downton Abbey is done I don't think there will be any worry that GA will get it right. That said, I'm excited to see how the economic roller coaster of the era, the panics of 1884, 93, 96, and 1907 and 10, Tammany Hall, the end of Gilded Age and rise of the Progressive Era etc... will be incorporated into the story line. This is not a documentary so I don't expect exact fidelity to history, but some of these things definitely need to be included in the series.
