The satellite part is GPS. The planes figure out where they are then transmit that along with speed and identification. Ground receivers and other aircraft receive that data. Sending is ADSB-Out and is required if all aircraft in controlled airspace. ADSB-In is so that the receiving aircraft can know what’s around them. It is optional.

Don't the aircraft themselves emit ADS-B signals? Did you guys mean to say 'How satellite based ADS-B works?'

I use ADS-B to track military aircrafts, like C-130H/J, Airbus A400M, and more!!

Cool!! This is how it is possible to track aircraft!!

Good idea! Maybe we'll get the plane routes up to freeway speed yet, instead of the current "two lane road!"

ADS-B is a beautiful system that works with ground units. Here’s what ADS-B does because I don’t see a correct explanation of it anywhere on the replies.

ADS-B is used to enhance SAFETY between airplanes and to help prevent mid air collisions, especially around airports.

Here’s an example. Let’s say that I just took off on runway 14 at H-75. This is located due South of MEM. I climb and as I am passed through 600’ AGL, two airplanes pop up on my ADS receiver. I can see all pertinent information pertaining to each flight that is on my screen. I can also talk to each airplane on my screen.
Now, they can equally do the same to me and my airplane.
I’ve been flying for over 40 years. This is one of the best safety systems I’ve ever seen.
Hope that clears up some confusion. There’s a lot more to this than I’ve pointed out. Get some information from your local FLIGHT SERVICE STATION (FSS).

In the UK it runs at 1090MHz, how powerful must the transmitter be to transmit 1090MHz all around it, over 150 miles away!!
