Also have to taken in to account companies that like to pinch their IT budget to the point its in effective and relies on automation for day to day activities. And the whole poisoned pool issue with VM jumping, your cloud may not have been directly compromised but the mom and pop reno company who shares your server (on the cloud) might be compromised and spread laterally through the server.
In October 2018 there was a zero day attack that affected samba based servers and NAS'es (Qnap and others) that was not addressed until significant damage was done to systems (CVSE report came out two days later, and the patch 5 days later). This nasty little brute broke its containment and seized control of the severs admin systems and you get the pile of ransomeware.
