I must have seen the Joe Zawinul Syndicate at least a dozen times when they were touring in Europe during the mid and late nineties. I got the chance to exchange a few words and a handshake with Joe as well after attending one of his masterclasses at the North Sea Jazz festival. I believe this must have been in July 1998. I was performing there as well with an avant garde electronic jazz project that year, so I had some backstage privileges.

Yeah it is pretty tough, but Joe was smart enough to make it easier by picking Bb key so that playing any melody strict to the pentatonic scale would keep the same keys on the keyboard.

That way D key becomes Bd and viceversa, F becomes G and viceversa but C stays C

This helps because it reduces the cognitive or thinking load almost to zero, but on the other side the left hand is playing backing chords on the Rhodes,
