There is nothing funnier than having intentionally inflammatory statements read back to you in a serious tone. The fact it happens to destiny so often is my favorite thing about his content.

CS should make shorts where he reads mean tweets.

It’s so clear CS not only enjoyed this conversation but also feels like Destiny has an interesting and worthwhile brain to probe, yet the comments on here are acting as if there’s a side to take. Get off your high horse, both these guys showed humility and open-mindedness regarding their ethical framework. They also both made the best case for why they believe what they do (and how far that can extend to prescriptivism to other people). Both great thinkers. There’s stuff here to criticize but wholesale dismissal is brain rot. Let’s do better.

Destiny is like a guy who watched a bit too much Rick and Morty and made it his personality

It SO defines Destiny as a person that he can have that utter shite read back to him and think, "No, yeah, I nailed it there."

Ah yes, "self awareness" the ultimate form of dismissing any criticism just cause "duh I'm aware I'm like this hehe"

Ethics is about living with oneself and one's environment. we are a being that is subjected to pleasure and suffering, hence, needs and wants. we are a part of the world and are conditioned to live with one another (we cant create our own world where we are the ultimate subject. Even in advanced virtual reality, it is still bounded by an external machine to run it, where it will eventually decay). so, ethics is the study of systems of interaction that works for everybody. what we want is an important aspect, but so are everyone's wants, which makes ethics complicated. meta-ethic is about objective ethics, similar to metaphysic, i.e. objective reality.

Destiny is the Ben Shapiro of leftism.

The funny thing is that it's completely the other way round. We need more meta-ethics awareness. And less of the circlejerking justifying your own sins thing, what Destiny is doing.

I did watch this entire discussion but I must say I hate conversations about meta ethics, they bore me to death and are always the most extreme hypothetical situations. I’m not saying they’re not useful, but they’re just not for me.

Also why are people being so tribal in the comments, from what I can tell both of these just had an enjoyable conversation, learning from each other and picking each other brains.. some of you guys are pathetic

I am a little puzzled about what destiny is doing here. first off, he takes his valuation of "human sentience" over other sentience as fundamental because it makes him feel better.

he defends this by appealing to a metaethics that conveniently allows him to valuate things however he wants without further justification. that's prima facie a little dubious, but ok whatever.

what I really don't get is the sudden jackknife into the metaphysics of mind with the claim that animals are philosophical zombies. it's an immensely uphill battle, empirically and theoretically, to try to defend that claim. on it's best day, it is merely unproveable. so, how could you hope to use it to defend harm against animals?

why even bother going this route when you have already declared that the starting point of your ethics is purely arbitrarily?

If, as a result of this debate, you feel negatively about either of these people. I think you have some own problems to deal with in your head

Subjective morality states there is nothing objectively right or wrong morally.
So if a man commits a murder, he is not objectively wrong.
If he is not objectively wrong, he is innocent.
As true as 2+2=4 is how innocent he is objectively according to your view.
This is why subjective morality isn’t reasonable or true.

Never post a negative comment or paragraph that long.

I was a little surprised when CS was taking the moral realist position, my impression of him before had been that he was more of an anti realist. Anyone know a video he has where he goes into his moral foundation in more detail?

To me this happiness argument is a bit weird since I've never expected happiness for myself since I realize that doing the right thing will often make life harder on a person rather than not.
