I'm not Japanese, but I've done this naturally since I was a kid; and always I would wander until I would find my "spot"- my perfect place in that particular area of forest to just sit, watch, and listen. The Japanese have done the rest of the world a favor for naming and describing a behavior that's really instinctual- only forgotten and buried in modern (especially urban) life.

I go almost every weekend, all weekend. The doctor says, "whatever you are doing, keep it up". No problem Doc. Can do :)

Thank you for posting this. Shinrin-yoku has changed my life! I keep a sketch journal of my experience of each forest visit. It helps me relive my time in the woods. I sketch from memory after processing my walks in the days that follow. I have sketched from life on my walks but I prefer to sit and absorb, emptying my mind.

I remember how much I love the outdoors as a young girl. Now I have a name for it. It's so freeing. I am using it in my art workshops to help people connect more effortlessly with themselves and their art. The results are astounding.

"You fill up my senses, like a night in the forest."  John Denver was apparently a prophet as well as a poet.

I've had to do this since I was a child. I can feel the imbalance whenever I skip going for a bit. Just a natural pull. I'd like to become a guide. It's a goal of mine I hope to work on with this new year.

I often go mountain biking to "bliss out" - and stop to listen to trees & breeze...     I call it Shinrin-Yoku'ing...!

Thank you for this educational piece. Yes, it has been very intuitive to find such forest bathing as beneficial to my well-being. Do you know if it would be helpful to designate an forest area as a 'certified" shinrin-yoku area? I'm in Middle Tennessee)

tonight is the first time i am hearing about this. it sounds wonderful, in the summer in a really nice park. i have a lot of weed cluttered abandoned lots in my neighborhood and believe me, its natural, but its not a good feeling.

If you do this, don't wear any scents, perfumes or colognes (or patchouli, you hippie), and don't smoke (not even weed, you hippie).
