Star Realms Legacy (Rise of Empire): My Favorite Mechanism

Jamey discusses his favorite mechanisms in the 2-player competitive legacy version of Star Realms. "Legacy" refers to permanent changes that can't be undone. I forgot to mention that the upgrade mechanism adds layers to the card-buying process: Do you buy a better card or a cheaper card with an upgrade?

I had no idea they had a Legacy game coming out. And I was just thinking how I'm about out of Legacy games to play... (Just finished Sagrada Legacy). Might preorder this!

Nice shirt by the way, Jamey. 😄

I have this pre-ordered looking forward to getting this to the table in Feb. Played our first game of Clank 2 last night, in that game you get your upgrades at the end of the game. This mechanism of benefits immediately sound a lot more fun.

Some thoughts about progression speed: Fast progression is good but not always. Because progression generally asks you to make a choice and if players do not feel capable enough to make that choice yet then it could feel overwhelming. That is why you see behaviors like saving skill points etc. in RPG games.

I believe this would be exacerbated in a table top legacy game, where the decisions feel much more permanent. So making players feel comfortable with their choices first by either getting them to a certain level of understanding or by giving the message that "you can't go wrong" needs to accompany very fast progression.

After completing the campaign, would you say it would be worth playing again in the normal 2P-6P format?

Compared to my group finishing Clank! Legacy 1, after we were done there was no desire to play on the completed maps. We knew others wouldn't understand the inside jokes of customized cards as well.

for me the star realms is dissapointment of 2024 ... i got excited when i heard about that new Star Trek version, but after finding out that the new game offers zero innovation after so many years, was something that kinda broke my hearth
