Thank you Fr! Being brought up taught that pirating content is wrong (and now personally and firmly believing it) I feel that this is a very difficult issue to speak out about as so many people, including the faithful and people of high moral authority, continually participate in and promote this culture of piracy and are so dismissive of or even condescending about its immorality because it seems so small and insignificant. Please continue to speak out about this! God bless :D

I'm curious whether this would also apply to media products no longer available due to age, lack of distribution or lack of localised releases? For example, the 1988 adaptation of Legend of the Galactic Heroes never got an official release into the Anglosphere and laser disks or DVDs are pretty rare to come by and would only be useful if you understood Japanese. Meanwhile, the only really accessible version available is a torrented one with fan-produced subtitles.

Its illegal so yes since we keep the laws of the land unless it goes against Jesus (such as banning worship)

At the same time, if you talk about video games, running to your local GameStop and buying a copy of skyrim is the same as downloading it. This is because the copy was obtained legitimately and sold, however when you buy said product, you pay the company selling it not the creators. Its the same deal, you download a copy of something that was bought legitimately, and sold for free.

yeah i guess its wrong to tippy-toe around it, it still boils down to stealing

Copyright also includes of course copying at all! It's against the law to copy your favorite CD onto your computer because the license you purchase only applies to the cd you bought. It is a seriously fine line to walk when it comes to modern convenience, conscience, and God's law

What if even if you do want to support the content creators legally but the legal sites just don't have the content I want. I live in a country where legal sites to watch anime like Funimation, VRV are blocked and Crunchyroll (the only site left) doesn't have the content because it is region locked. Now would piracy still be wrong? Because even If I wanted to support content creators, I just can't because legal sites are region blocked here in my country

My opinion is that piracy is not theft at all, but that copyright itself is in fact the sin.

If I buy a book then I own that book and everything in it. I have the right to sell the book share it, burn it, etc. Copyright is contrary to the universal destination of goods. It says that one person can control what I do with my own property.

If you publish something you have made it public and you do not have a right to tell other people what they can and cannot do with their property. Online piracy is not theft because you cannot "own" public information.

Thus if you cannot own public information you have no rights over public information. If you gather up public information then you can sell it but you have no right to stop others from selling or sharing that public information.

If you write a song and sing it in public you have no right to stop other people who hear your song from singing it.

Piracy is not theft it is just a government create and enforced monopoly that is contrary to reason.

The whole idea of intellectual property didn’t even exist until recently, and tons of literate people historically would have done the equivalent of “piracy” today. Imagine if someone copyrighted scripture in the first century. All of the monks who transcribed and preserved it for us would have sinned as a result. Weird concept. You can’t own public info.

I am not a catholic but I agree fully to your arguments. I repented from downloading copyrighted materials on the internet. Thank you. By the way, Christ and only Christ is the Savior and the mediator to God.

so, do birds hold the copy right of their songs ? if so would not God hold copy right for everything ? he is the creator of everything is he not ? are you saying that by your own will you created something with out the will of God ? are you a God ?

Is downloading older movies and video games sinful??

Father, what about emulating older video games that aren't sold anymore, or of handheld games that you have bought and want to play it on a different device (such as the computer)? Let's say I bought a pokemon gameboy game back when it came out. Would it be wrong/sinful for me to emulate (essentially pirate) that same game so that I can play it on my computer so that I can record it for youtube videos?

I need advice. I've always downloaded those games that are paid on Google, and my friends wanted to play Minecraft. So I gave them the link from Google. I've been feeling guilty for that. I don't know if it's illegal or not. Anyone can help?
