Editing Software: Davinci Resolve (Premiere Pro does not offer compatibility with 1DXMKII RAW files :( )
1DXMKIII was brought in and set to C-Log2 gamma under the raw settings in Davinci
Both 1DXMKIII & RED had the same lens & settings used during all tests

Red wins, looks more cinematic and less harsh. But I think you can dial out the harshness in post.

besides the sharpeness is hard to tell the diference because you are not really pushing these cameras. If you push these cameras into extreme scenerios (mixed lighting, high contrast, overposure) is when you can tell the diference between a still camera and cinema camera.

The difference In theory that you should see between these two cameras should live in the dynamic range. That’s why someone buys a red or Alexa. Your comparison shots had very little dynamic range. The one shot that had a little you did double red. In everything else the mk3 should match up well.

The 1dx has a Wider Picture because of the Fullframe sensor and the Red has a Kinda Cropped Picture ✌

Great video. happy to see the 1dx right there with the Red. 4:15 of course the 1dx is sharper. The Red, Arri, Sony FS7 and Venice don't add sharpening. That is actually how I spotted the 1dx - it's sharper. All DSLRs and MSLRs are over sharpened in camera. Would have loved a scene that had more DR. Thanks!

Do you need a special card to record 5.5K RAW? in Canon it says the bitrate is 2.600Mbps, but the cards available write at 1.430Mbps top. Thanks!

I only got 1 wrong. For the last two, I felt like the shots were pretty indistinguishable. I've shot on the Red Raven quite a bit so I'm somewhat used to seeing Red footage. For me, the shadows and highlights gave most of it away, but I must say, I'm pretty impressed with the Mark III haha. Super great review so thanks for sharing this with us!

I honestly can say this.... I had them all right in the comparison videos and when you got to the last video I had trouble with trying to find the difference...so I count that as being right also... LOL

I’ve come to realize how pointless these test videos can be lol but of course this is after watching a ton of them. Nothing beats real shoot scenarios that can maybe shed better light on either. The Canon looks good though and so does the Red! Both look great 👍, loving the consistency!

I got them right. The lower dynamic range on the canon leads to more contrast in the skin tones. I wanted the canon to look as good but it just doesn't. Thanks for the test! Appreciate that it was all skin tones and would love to see more.

The color gave it away. Got them all right. It depends on other features the red dragon offers if id pay 10k more for it. Most likely yes I would.

DSLRs have a more digital look, you can tell by the sharpness, it did get harder towards the end the look so similar I thought you color graded them to match lol. I guess I was "kind of right" since it ended up being the same camera. I wonder what would happen if you did a test where you tried to make any DSLR emulate a cinema camera.

I got all but the last 2 (clever). The big difference was the depth of field and the added sharpness. The 1DX Mark III has a much newer sensor than the scarlet w so you can see the difference in sensor technology.


Edit: Also what program were you using? This could make a big difference since Resolve is one of the few NLEs that can edit the raw natively which also gives you access to the CLog-2 which increased the DR by 3 stops.
