For people are wondering why Afghanistan is hard to invade is because 80% of Afghanistan land is covered with mountains. Thanks for 1k likes

i love how us presidents comment on how the afghan people are fiercely determined to fight and are able to not surrender even against nominally superior forces, and then they try to invade themselves lolol.

"They invaded an innocent country and must suffer the consequences of their actions." Invades iraq on suspicions of weapons of mass destruction.

I love the way Oversimplified puts it;

"In 1980, The Soviet Union got jealous of the US and decided they should have their own Vietnam"

My grandfather served in Afghanistan. He belonged to the unit that was one of the first to enter Afghanistan. And although my grandfather looks like a stern Siberian man who won’t even show sadness, remembering Afghanistan he will at least shed a tear

NOTE: The casualty rate doesn't only include the Soviets but also the Afghan National Army. Actual Soviet casualties were pretty low.

Watching TV through the 1980s, the news seemed to be dominated by three wars; the war in Afghanistan, the war in Lebanon and that between Iran and Iraq.

Very often one can hear that the USSR lost the Afghan war, and the Afghans once again defeated everyone. However, few people ask the most important question - was it the Soviet troops' task to win and conquer? Many people have a very vague idea of what the limited contingent was doing in Afghanistan. The average average citizen is sure that they had the task of destroying all the Afghan opposition units and thus ending the war. The contingent was really limited. 100, 000 soldiers (give or take) for such a huge territory (look at the map) is very little. Realistically, Soviet troops could only control key points - areas of large cities, strategic passes, etc. important objects. Moreover, these forces were not enough to simultaneously destroy all groups of Dushmans.

So why did the troop surge take place in the first place? It had a very specific goal - to strengthen the existing regime and, as they call it, to build up its muscles. First of all, to create a strong Afghan army and power structures in general. Plus - to lure the population to the side of the government through a competent socio-economic policy. As part of this, agricultural machinery was imported (Afghans by that time mostly worked in the fields technologically at the level of the Middle Ages), irrigation facilities, hospitals, schools, etc. were built. As a matter of fact, such a policy yielded good results. The Afghan regime really became stronger. When the Soviet army withdrew from Afghanistan in 1989, many thought that the remaining pro-Soviet regime would quickly fall. In the spring of that year, the mujahideen attempted an offensive near the Pakistani border town of Jalalabad and were defeated, forcing them to retreat into Pakistani territory. As it turned out, the regime did not rely on Soviet bayonets, but had a very capable armed force.

Советское афганское правительство продержалось на год больше, чем сам СССР.

It seems that the United States didn't learn much from the Soviet experience in Afghanistan.

20 years later the Americans would fail at the same thing.

(Edit)I like seeing russian and nato bots in my replies arguing whos withdrawal from Afghanistan was worse even tho both dont want to admit they both evacuated terribly🤣.

I never knew so little actually happened in terms of territory control in this war! But the most eye opening part is the new clips from the time, they sound exactly the same as now and the condemnation for the attack on Ukraine. History really does repeat itself!
