The (nearly) yearly burning and re-errecting actually works out pretty well as a metaphor for the story of Thor eating the goats, and then the goats returning back to life! Every year the effigy is burned down, and miraculously returns back to life the next year! Maybe the burning should start to become a Yule tradition in Sweden!

In the countryside in Norway we still dress up in the days between yule and the new years, and go "julebukk" =yulegoat/ram. We wear masks or dress up as the traditional "nisse" the red hat wearing fae living in our barns in Norway. (Traditionally the nisse are the one who come to our houses with presents in norway, not santa.) And than we get candy or liqour, walking from house to house!

Also, not that long ago, the yulegoats and other ornaments made of straw was thought to suck up all the evil spirits that romed around in yule. So after yule was over, they burned all the straw ornaments to get rid of the evil spirits. I guess that is why they are burning the big one in Sweden. :)

I love deepdiving in to the old traditions of Norway, and I grew up on my old family farm with LOTS of superstitions. We allways put out some riseporridge to the nisse every christmas eve, so that he will keep being kind to us, and take care of the animals! :)

Thank you for yet another great video! My grandmother used to scare us kids, saying that if we did not behave, the Yule Goat would come to get us on Christmas. Put us in a bag and take us away. She said it with a smile, like it was a joke, but always with a hint of seriousness in her voice. My grandparents lived in the woods, southeast of Gävle, and staying there always got your imagination going, especially during dark winter nights...

In early 1900 sweden wanted to record and learn about their own history & tradition and so interviewed people from rural sides and who was born in the early 1800, and talked to them about christmas and how they celebrated it
many recorded what is now well known the haye on the floor. probably for thors goat to have something to eat IF he would come and visit. They also used to knock on door and flee the house and leaving gifts, and people in return would leave food outside for the "gnomes" or gifts for the elves.
my grandma had her own "julbock" christmas goat in the late 30´s in her family that we inherited. her family didnt have santa clause.

I love my Julbock. We put them out every year and we even have the ornaments for our Yule tree. It’s nice to see so many adopting these traditions now

Anyone want to see a race between Thor and Freyja to see who has the faster chariot?

Also, Yule occurs during the Winter Solstice, when the Sun enters in the Capricorn constellation. Capricorn is symbolized by the goat.

I'd never heard of the Yule Goat before, thank you for the lesson. Side note: I love how wavy your hair is in this video.

*My twin sister and I were adopted as babies arriving on 24th Dec.* *My parents were extremely Christian and loved Christmas and I used to love it too.* *Now they have gone into the afterlife and I miss them, so Christmas just wasn't the same without them.* *I have discovered that I love learning about the Craft and Pagan traditions, which were forbidden to me when my parents were alive.* *I am thankful for the information you provide here as I celebrate my very first Yule.*

I've been obsesed with the yulegoat (julbock) this year! I made my own out of dried grasses, and I made yarn wrapped ones for my friends! It's so cute! Though the Odin story is pretty unnerving...
