In this video I talk about the best books for beginners learning complex variables also known as complex analysis. I should mention that all of these books are extremely good and do cover tons of material.

Fundamentals of Complex Analysis: with Applications to Engineering and Science by Saff and Snider

Complex Variables and Applications by Brown and Churchill.

Schaum's Outlines of Complex Variables by Murray Spiegel.

I only remember two times in my life when I was in awe by a mathematical result. The first time was in high school when the teacher used integration to calculate the area beneath a function. I couldn't believe that was even possible, and the fact that the result was often a whole number or a fraction for particular cases, or that it could be expressed by a relatively-simple formula for the general case amazed me. The second time was when I encountered the theorem of complex analysis that says if a complex function f has an essential singularity at the point a, then every neighbourhood of a contains every complex number (with the exception of one, if I remember correctly) infinitely many times. That's like infinity times infinity in an infinitely small space. Hard to wrap your head around it, but that's maths.

Thanks for the great vid! I am most certainly will get the Schaums Outline for Complex Variables for self-study and reference.

My favorite is Complex Variables with Applications by S. Ponnusamy and Herb Silverman. The best part about the book is its conceptual questions which I have never found in any other book. Another book which I liked is by Needham.

Yes, Complex Variables and Applications is a great book. I found the second edition by Ruel V. Churchill, 1960 which must have been written before Brown joined writing it. It is amazing how cost effective rooting through old books stores can be. I have heard that Baby Rudin was something like $7.95 new, hardcover, second edition in 1964 to 1970. The last I saw, the third edition was $150.00 plus in hardcover. And now it may be out of print, or just in paperback.

I only came here to see if you had included Brown and Churchill, it's been my favorite since the high school days but I'll give Saff and Snider a read too.

To me Zill D. - A First Course in Complex Analysis with applications - Bartlett 2003 it's quite good and easy full of exercises
Brown and Churchill it's a bit inferior but good too
And similar is Saff Snider, maybe a bit better than Churcill
Ponnusamy Silverman it's less clear and less exercises, but sometimes good demonstrations and very clear
Needham it's not a good book, it's a chaos not easy to follow
Rudin it's good but it require a basic complex number course before, and Alhfors is there for that or Ablowitz
Polya is not introductory, you can use and for some stuff it's great

Another good book is “Basic Complex Analysis” by Marsden and Hoffman. Well written and easy to follow.

I’ve been studying the latter chapters of the Churchill and Brown book since September for my university dissertation, it’s a great book :)

I ordered Saff and Snider before I found your channel. Looks like I made a good choice

Hey good review. By the way the book by George Polya is awesome too

For a higher undergraduate level, Donald Sarason notes are very good!

How does a course in "complex variables" compare with a course in complex analysis? I'd guess a course in "analysis" is terminally interested in theoretical questions, whereas the corresponding "variables" course is more focused on reinforcing a skill set related to the field (in this case, amply leveraging conformal mappings, residues, etc.). Is this correct, or am I just making up nonsense? Thanks.

Months ago, I struggled to find the best beginner university maths books to start with, as I was self-teaching at home. Initially, I didn't know where to start, as I didn't have categories of mathematics. Then, I found categories at Khan Academy online. Beginner-friendly categories hugely helped. I have since been using their categories, so I could learn maths in order of difficulty. I will do the same with physics.

What do you think about " Complex Variables theory and application " H.S. Kasana?
Means is it good or bad ?
