Not sure if i commented on here before, but I'm going to go for it anyway, I'm a mechanic in the UK, almost every tech gets paid a hourly wage as standard (depending on experience) the higher your hourly wage, Senior Techs can range from £20-25 upwards - Master Techs £15-18 - Tyre Fitters & Service Techs for example are on £10-12 a hour. Most company's offer a bonus scheme which basically incorporates the flate rate mindset in that your get paid a certain percentage each month on the hours you have billed, on top of your hourly salary, thus keeps hourly Techs efficient if they want that bonus paycheck every month 😎💪👍

Worked my way through college for my engineering degree as a two way radio repair tech. I was paid 30% of the billed labor.

The place I just moved to does a hybrid system of a hourly and your flat rate hours at the end of the week are multiplied times itself. So if I flag 40 hours it’s $40 an hour if I flag 18 hours it’s $18 hour. Plus your salaried hours for just being there. It’s a pretty good system.

I’m also a Chrysler tech I like flat rate because of the idea of the harder you work the more you produce, so it’s pretty much up to you. The only Down side is the work needs to be there

Well the reason why as technician will not stand up for each other is because some of us are being taken care of and the rest have to pick the crumbs that's left over, so what needs to happen is we need a true labor governing board that oversees a true and honest pay scale that will benefit the auto makers, shop/dealership owners, really and truly the flat rate system has out run its course it's time for a new system that benefits everyone.

Who much different is the pay scale for hourly vs flat rate.
What happens when work returns from not being done correctly or short cuts.
I'm asking because first time looking into flat rate. Lot of pros for it just want to no about negative parts . Plus who does the clean up and organize of work area

I’m a flag technician at Chevrolet dealer. They pay me 20 dlls per hour if I reach 90 % proficiency but if I don’t reach the 90 % proficiency they pay me all hours at 13.00 !!!! Do you think it is fair?

Hourly/Flat Rate whichever is more during that pay period.

This pay model is only for technicians currently enrolled in an automotive program at the local community college. My dealership sponsors four students per year. Fantastic program.

The 2- year program goes:

1st Year

3 months full time work (Lube Tech)
3 months full time school (work as much as can/want to after school)
3 mo/work (Lube Tech)
3mo/school

2nd year

3 mo/work as mechanics apprentice
3mo/school
3mo/apprentice
3mo/school

I'm one week into my experience, and I love it. Thanks be to Subaru for initiating a program like this.

Also, one qualifying student during that academic year (highest grades of the four students), gets tuition, books, lab fees, and tools paid for by Subaru.

Love your channel. You're doing great work.

I’m hourly plus commission. Been working on cars professionally for 4-5 years and I’m 24. Made just under $70k this year

No one ever says how much they should make. Only we are not paid enough. What is it that you want to be paid?

Let me preface this by saying that I am not a mechanic I am a welder. I work at a company that was incentive based(piece rate) and what you made was only limited by your ability. Production was through the roof. Quality was taken care of by non conformance items being docked on your check. Now we are hourly and make a good wage but performance is abysmal. Company is now contemplating subbing out our work and I can't blame them.

I’m a diesel tech and we do an incentive pay. We get paid hourly but are able to make a little more money if we finish jobs faster. It’s pretty nice to be able to make a little extra but still have my hourly pay.

I like what you’re doing.

Where I live, a lot of the top Toyota dealer techs in the area all know each other. And we have all sort of secretly shared our pay rates amongst each other.

So we all know what shops are paying what. And when someone gets a nice raise, we all go to our boss and get one as well.

For years some top techs were making $18/hr while others were making $24 because everyone was in the dark.

Since then, the pay has drastically increased across the board.

Gm certified master tech, bumper to bumper, gasoline only. Work the flat rape system... worst decision ever. Started in a independent shop where everyone was hourly. Everyone was happy, worked hard and got vehicles done. Living up here in Wisconsin with all the rust figured it would be nice after completing tech school, to start at dealer 8 years later here I am. Watching the one guy in the shop get gravy after gravy and me and a couple other guys getting shafted with constant warranty work, majority of it being heavy line and electrical. The flat rate system has wrecked the enjoyment of fixing cars for me sure there are good times but there are more bad then good seems no matter where u go in my current area, the pay doesn’t get much better, everyone wants to pay u on this terrible system, promise u the greenest grass that is fertizlied by the biggest line of bullshit... 100k no problem. Well pay for this and that give u a bonus for signing. Yet usually is empty promises as u watch them line there pockets with record months... and u get a pizza party... I know I’m not the only one and I don’t wan to have a pity party. But what’s wrong with paying a guy a solid wage, (more then he has invested in tools) and let him get back to fixing vehicles correctly and not worried bout how many shortcuts can I do so I can move onto the next vehicle.... I keep my intergrity to the max and take it in the shorts a lot to make sure the customer gets the correct fix the first time just wish guys like me out there didn’t have to loose so much for doing it correctly... let’s not even get started on triing to get the claim paid for and getting back flagged after u lost hours and hours on a big job, that not all the service information was correct for and when u wrote your ten page novel, they skimmed it and didn’t fully read or even understand how I t works so they incorrectly flag it.

I'm just a DIY guy who repairs my vehicles so I can't contribute to the conversation but I do enjoy everything about the repair industry including how techs are paid. (I like to be an educated customer on those jobs I can't handle)

Flat rate would work if it offers a guarantee of at least 30 hours a week. That should cover the slow season and for young techs who just starting LIFE. Bills doesn’t decrease just because you’re slow at work. This should promote quality work, this especially, would encourage our future techs to perform more quality work. For efficiency on flat rate, offer an incentive such as: $1 more of your pay after 50 hours; another $1 more after 55 hours; another $1 more after 60 hours; etc. If all flat rate work like this, everybody eat.
