Pasta Robot Prepares Meal in 45 Seconds
Marunouchi is the prominent business district in the vicinity of Tokyo Station. While business persons on the go have countless choices for lunch, E Vino Spaghetti, welcomes people that have very little time for a lunch break. It is operated by Pronto Corporation, famous for pasta chain Pronto, and other local eateries such as Di Punto and Illy Caffe. However, E Vino Spaghetti is no ordinary restaurant. It uses the world's first automated pasta cooking robot, developed in collaboration with TechMagic Inc. TechMagic creates new food infrastructure by utilizing cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence machine learning and robotics. After four years of development, the world’s first ever pasta cooking robot P-Robo has made its debut.
P stands for Pronto and it is their fourth generation machine. What is most unique, is it even washes the pans on its own which leads to less human labor and prep time, cooking up to 90 meals per hour.
Top Five Japanese Industrial Robotics Manufacturers
It has been more than 50 years since the birth of the Kawasaki-Unimate 2000, Japan’s first domestically manufactured industrial robot. Initially based on an American design, it soon evolved to meet the needs of Japanese car manufacturers – upgrading from five degrees of freedom to six and doubling the payload capacity to 25 kg. Weighing in at almost 1.5 tonnes, these hefty robotic arms began life spot welding cars. They played a critical role in establishing Japan as an economic and manufacturing powerhouse. By the 1980s, Kawasaki and other Japanese robot manufacturers were expanding into North America and Europe.
By the 1990s, Japan’s new generation of cleanroom robots powered the Asian IT revolution – building integrated circuits and LCD screens in countries like Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and later China. A new century saw Japanese automation and robotics companies continue to innovate, expanding into areas such as ultra-precise medical robots capable of performing delicate surgery, and collaborative robots able to safely work side-by-side with humans. Today, Japan remains the world’s number one industrial robot manufacturer – delivering 45% of the global supply. As of the end of 2021, five Japanese industrial robotics manufacturers – Kawasaki, Fanuc, Yaskawa, Daifuku and SMC – had a combined market capitalization of around US$120 billion. Fanuc and Yaskawa alone accounted for 29.5% of the global industrial robot market in 2019.
Japanese Firm Develops Robot for Warehouse Shortages
A Tokyo-based venture firm has developed a robot that can help human staff at warehouses pick out products for shipping. The aim is to alleviate labor shortages in the logistics industry as more people shop online. The robot, developed by Rapyuta Robotics, is designed help collect products from across huge warehouses so they can be shipped out. A system driven by artificial intelligence analyzes the warehouse layout and determines the most efficient way to navigate the maze of shelves. The machine's width is only about 60 centimeters, allowing it to pass through narrow aisles.
In a demonstration, three of the robots worked together with human staff. Once items are placed on the robots, the next destination immediately appears on the screen. The venture firm said its technology makes it possible for workers to pick up roughly twice as many products during a shift, while also reducing the distance they walk.
