Stellar Blade Review

Stellar Blade is one of the more interesting games to come out recently. I think it's easy to dismiss this game due to its large focus on, let’s just say, its visual appeal. And fan service is definitely a strong aspect of this game. But, once you really start playing and get into the meat of the game, it becomes much more obvious what the true focus of the game is, and that’s, if you’ll allow me to use a pun, it’s stellar combat.

The combat here is a blend of a lot of things. It feels a bit like Bayonetta, it reminded me of the newer God of War games, it even has some soulslike vibes. It all comes together to create a combat system that feels both kind of familiar yet kind of new at the same time.

Most importantly though, it’s just really, super amazingly fun to fight as EVE. It’s flashy, and satisfying to take down enemies, but the game’s also no walk in the park, there’s a nice challenge here and it feels great to overcome the hurdles that are thrown at you.

I’ve heard a lot of people compare this game to Neir: Automata, and I definitely got that impression at first, but I feel like the similarities are only surface level, both aesthetically and plot wise. And speaking of the plot, the story here is just okay.

It’s not horrible, but the characters and voice acting are all pretty flat, and the plot just isn’t paced well. The story beats are initially presented at a nice steady tempo, but eventually it feels like the game just ends without any proper buildup or fanfare.

It’s worth mentioning that this game is on PS5 only. It wasn’t developed by Sony, but they did publish it. So, if I had to make a guess, I would say it’s likely going to head to PC in a year or two, which is great, because I think it’s the type of game that I think would do really well on PC and with PC audiences.

Overall, I really liked Stellar Blade. It has its fair share of flaws, but I think that the combat is good enough to make up for the areas where the game isn’t as good.
