This is a comparison of four different Nikon 50mm lenses. I use photo examples to show some differences and hopefully this video will help you save some time and money in the process! I compare the 1.4 AI-s, the 1.4 G, the 1.8 E, and the 1.8 D. This is not an overly technical view, but wanted to share! My favorite is the 50mm 1.4 AI-s, but there are a few more I want to get my hands on when I get the chance. Which is your favorite?

The way my 50 1.4ai renders on my D700 is almost film like in its colors and look. It's beautiful

I have the 50 1.8G that I often use on my Nikon D610, it's a great performer, very contrasty and sharp, but I'm also looking forward to the 50 1.4 AIS because of that artistic look it provides.

Just wondering if the 50mm F1.8D will work on nikon older film camera (like fm series, fe series or f3)?

thanks

There is also a 55mm 1.2 that gives good artistic bokeh and rendering at 1.2 and sharpness increases when stopped down for more scientific detailed pictures.

As far as I know Nikkor 50 f1.4 D is the same as AI-S optically. If I were shooting autofocus body I'd consider getting it.

I own and use these 50mm lenses on full-frame camera bodies:
Asahi 50mm f/1.4 Super Takumar (8-element) (49mm filter)
Asahi 50mm f/1.4 Super Takumar (7-element) (49mm filter)
Fujinon 50mm f/1.4 EBC (49mm filter)
Fujinon 50mm f/1.4 (49mm filter)
Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 AF-D (52mm filter)
Nikon 50mm f/1.8 Series E (52mm filter)

The Nikon 50mm f/1.8 Series E is the most reasonably priced.
The Nikon 50mm f/1.4 AF-D is the only auto focus.
The 8-element 50mm f/1.4 Super Takumar is my personal favorite.

All produce high quality images.

I like to use the 50mm in a 24/50/105mm or 24/50/135mm or 28/50/105mm or 28/50/135mm lens kit.

You can get a better made version of series e pancake lens out of Japan that is not labeled series e and it's serial number starts with a 2 in stead of the American market version. The Japanese market version of the lens has better build quality and a closer focusing distance.

I also have a older factory ai converted 50mm auto s 1.4 that is pretty good. People say the SC version is better because of multi coating of lens element.

The camera guys keep saying that the f1.4 is inferior to the f1.8 pancake lens BC of distortion and what not. And it's sharper wide open.

I have the 50/1.4 S (50 yrs old!) non ai and filed the ring down so it works with my d610, curious of differences in contrast and color rendition compared to a new 50/1.8d or even 50/1.4 ais, or 1.8 ais... hmmm

I have the 50mm AI-S 1.8 (no E) and I love it... it was 50€ some month ago and I shot with it in my Nikon DF... I was looking for a 85mm and a 25mm (I also have a 24mm2.8 E series). What lenses could you recommend me?

I think I have the 1.8 ais. Is there any other iterations of it other than the "E" type and how would I know?

The Ai 50mm 1.8 is the best of them all.

I'm not able to love the Nikon lenses because they give me the reality without interpretation. They are for tourism, wildlife photos, etc. I would like an artistic photography. I'm selling all my Nikon analog setup.
