The wormhole effect was one of the best special effects of the time. The theater was packed (Saw it the 2nd day it came out) and the audience itself seemed to move in unison to it. Truly spectacular how they made it look like some sort of a time or space differential of some sorts.

The only wormhole of all Star Trek movies. A wormhole in a shape of a spiral. The first change from impulse power to warp speed of the newly transformed starship Entreprise. One of the best visual effects ever. The wormhole created a repulsive effect slowing the dialogue of all the crew of the Entreprise. Phooootoooon toooorpeeeedoooes. Taaaargetiiiing assssterooooid. Awesome! Incredible! Astonishing! Fantastic! The very best special effect of all the movie. My all-time favorite warp speed effect. That's why Star Trek: The Motion Picture is a milestone in the sci-fi franchise. The first movie I saw in English in movie theaters. It was a hell of experience. On the big screen, I felt I was falling in outer space. My favorite Star Trek movie.

Kirk's probably the only captain in starfleet history whose impatience caused a wormhole lol.
(For those who don't know what I mean; the imbalance in the warp engines is what created the wormhole, so the second they went to warp - wormhole)
