COOKING FOR A MAN! Vintage Cookbook Review and Recipes

In this video, I'm reviewing Cooking for a Man, published in 1953 by the makers of A1 Steak Sauce. I'm also cooking up a scrumptious snack from this collection - Snack of the Month.

I'm cooking through history and you're invited! Follow along with me as I prepare a recipe from one of my many vintage cookbooks. Will the results be delicious, or disastrous? There's only one way to find out. Thanks for checking out my midcentury cooking video and joining me in my vintage cooking corner.

Are you kidding me? Those Ritz crackers are most definitely stunners. I am, in fact, STUNNED! I liked what I saw and will now hit the subscribe button!

Also, I want to learn to cook for a man.

I laughed all the way through this video! As a person who has and uses your 1950s Betty Crocker cookbook, I adore the "Beau Catchers and Husband Keepers" cookie (or cooky) recipes :D

Ha ha ha! A whole “cooking for a man” book! I, a mere woman, like A-1 Steak Sauce - is that allowed?! 😂😂😂

Fun food fact: Shelf stable cheese was created by two Swiss chemists. Looking for a way to keep Swiss cheese from spoiling. They added Sodium Citrate. Years later Mr. Kraft did similar with different solution. He did this just before WWII and the US Army bought a lot of it. $$$!

Tongue in raisin sauce was featured, IIRC, in Judy Blume’s Starring Sally J. Friedman as Herself. Sally’s aunt (?) made it for dinner and Sally thought it was too disgusting looking to want to try it.

LOL My son is a great cook and enjoys A-1 sauce. Hubby used to make A-1 sauce professionally as top food tech. 2 men right there😂
Fun featured cook book, Anna!!

Tongue with raisin sauce is definitely a thing-it’s often served with a sweet and sour sauce. I can’t handle it-ever since I was a kid and I saw a raw beef tongue in my grandmothers refrigerator😂😂😂😂.

I still make a pumpkin beef stew recipe I got from an A-1 recipe booklet I got SO many years ago.

As for “meatloaf”: The word "pizza" was borrowed into English in the 1930s; before it became well known, pizza was called "tomato pie" by English speakers.

To was was very popular. My mom cooked with it. Raisins have been used for centuries for preserving. I learned this when I did some medieval studies and the Townsends channel talks about the chemistry of it. She didn’t cook tongue a lot. But raisins were in a lot.

Maybe it would be that in 1953 they were just a few years out from rationing from WWII and just barely recovered. So maybe that's why some ingredients are scant amounts. Salt, pepper and garlic st were just about the only spices my mom used. Yeah... not a good cook. Lol.❤

Back in 1954 men paid most if not all of the bills generally so I can see where recipes that men like would be important. However I don’t think many men would like a cold, jellied salmon loaf.
I was surprised by the minute quantities of spices and even the steak sauce that would seem not to even alter the taste of the dish.

My late husband was a better cook than i was. His whole family was good at it, and seemed to enjoy it. Just cook for me, and it'll enjoy it. Also, my mom would make cows tongue. It had quite a texture to it.
