No, this is an octobot. A robopus is.. something else.

"the winning strategy is to give up control" This is a trend ive been noticing a lot in robotics lately. Some guy at MIT calls it "unactuated robotics" and its a bit above my current skill level but mainly engineers are starting to realize that more control is not the path to beautiful dynamic robots. We should equip the bots with scenarios to react, but ultimately let them decide when to do so based on enviromental parameters. Just think how much smoother the mars rover mission wouldve been if the roverhad this type of feedback system. Just a thought.

Yeah, let's build sentinels, what could go wrong?

Interesting, but it still seems to be very inefficient and definitely not as good at swimming as conventional probes. Those flimsy tentacles have no way to grip the water, how do they expect it to move much at all? If we plan to send these things to other worlds, who knows how rough or calm the oceans could be.

what would happen if you put a real octopus inside a robotic exo-skeleton? Its tentacles interconnected with robotic feet and and hands via touchpads . Or connect a synaptic device - allowing it to communicate. Over time could it learn to walk - perhaps even talk? Perhaps becoming the sentient organic nervous system of a working cyborg?.
