Whom ever made up the word “Dongel” was stoned.

I do broadcast engineering and I use this to monitor my stations on my mac. It's a hell of a lot cheaper than a spectrum analyzer or mod monitor.

Lol that kid's face was cracking me up. It looked like he just woke up in a strange place and didn't know how he got there.

I have one of these and love it. I listen in my garage mostly while working out. One of the most positive fun/cost ratio ham gadgets IMO!

I love SDR! It would have been a dream to have had one as a kid. Instead I had crystal controlled scanner with ten channels that I had to keep trading out crystals constantly. I thought my first digital scanner was a Godsend. I currently have an SDR receiver connected to a vintage television antenna and a 523¼ centimeter ( 206 inch) virtical antenna on a duplexer. I know there are transmitting SDR radios. But without a license, I would have no use for it except for 27 megacycles CB, 49 megacycles, MURS, FRS. Thus, I just have the receiver.

I started with an rtl-sdr from wish years ago because of curiosity and just the idea of it all... Now I'm getting ready to take my technician test and start getting actual hardware because as it turns out, I think radio is pretty dang cool!

SDR is easily one of the coolest things you can get into, the list of stuff you can listen to is crazy but will of course depend on your kit but here are some of the things it can 'hear':

Listening to unencrypted Police/Ambulance/Fire/EMS conversations.Listening to aircraft traffic control conversations.Tracking aircraft positions like a radar with ADSB decoding.Decoding aircraft ACARS short messages.Scanning trunking radio conversations.Decoding unencrypted digital voice transmissions.Tracking maritime boat positions like a radar with AIS decoding.Decoding POCSAG/FLEX pager traffic.Scanning for cordless phones and baby monitors.Tracking and receiving meteorological agency launched weather balloon data.Tracking your own self launched high altitude balloon for payload recovery.Receiving wireless temperature sensors and wireless power meter sensors.Listening to VHF amateur radio.Decoding ham radio APRS TV.Sniffing GSM signals.Using rtl-sdr on your Android device as a portable radio scanner.Receiving GPS signals and decoding them.Using rtl-sdr as a spectrum analyzer.Receiving NOAA weather satellite images.Listening to satellites and the scatter.Listening to FM radio, and decoding RDS information.Listening to DAB broadcast radio.Use rtl-sdr as a panadapter for your traditional hardware radio.Decoding taxi mobile data terminal signals.Use rtl-sdr as a high quality entropy source for random number generation.Use rtl-sdr as a noise figure indicator.Reverse engineering unknown protocols.Triangulating the source of a signal.Searching for RF noise sources.Characterizing RF filters and measuring antenna SWR.Furthermore, with an upconverter or direct sampling mod to receive HF signals the applications are expanded to:Listening to amateur radio hams on SSB with LSB/USB modulation.Decoding digital amateur radio ham communications such as CW/PSK/RTTY/SSTV.Receiving HF weatherfax.Receiving digital radio mondiale shortwave radio (DRM).Listening to international shortwave radio.Looking for RADAR signals like over the horizon (OTH) radar, and HAARP signals.

Love SDR. I use one of these dongles on my radio telescope when I'm searching for rf in outer space. Great when pointed towards the Sun and planets.

That's Dust2 from CounterStrike, more specifically the B bomb site.

0:27 -- RTL = RealTek (a chip maker in Taiwan ; "L" added to distinguish it from RT prefix, which belongs to wifi maker RaLink of Cupertino, California and now Hsinchu, Taiwan) It was RealTek's RTL2832U chip that was first used as an SDR dongle.

I’ve recently been reading up on these and thinking about getting one. Thank you very much for breaking it down and explaining what it is in a way that’s easy for a newbie to understand.

installed GQRX today, screen is active and working as expected. I can see some of the local FM stations and some 2 mtr activity. Some issue with getting sound to work which I will look into tomorrow. Someone on a forum said turn up the volume but failed to mention where I might find the slider to do that. Looks like this is going to be lots of fun. Thanks for the video. I'm falling back into geekdom again, There is just no hope for me :-)
