What is obvious to a career pilot like Rhodey would not necessarily have been obvious to a non-pilot like Rogers. Plus since the plane at the end was flying on its own, it was proabably under the control of a mechanical autopilot system Steve didn't know how to turn off, so he had to literally strong-arm the controls all the way down.

Plus the bombs on board were -naquada- tesseract-enhanced, so who knows how destructive they could have been.

Rhodes is proven not to be an idiot time and time again like: hitting quill no bs, suggesting to kill thanos as a baby, and stealing the mk2 armor from Tony instead of trying to talk him down which doubled as him getting the military off Tony's back by giving them an armor
