Our Conair 1875 watt hairdryer started sparking close to the end/air outlet a few weeks ago so I just took it apart to see what was going on and there's a set of contact points in there that looks like it has a piece of bi metal attached. I think what happens, at least in this case, is the contact points (similar to a set of points inside an old car distributer) open and close depending on which heat setting is chosen. These points start to erode unevenly and don't close together true and flush with each other and there's a small gap at the edge of the points. I think this is where the sparks usually occur in these dryers. It's like plugging something with high amperage (like a heater or air compressor) into a wall outlet with a loose fitting plug. The current will jump around the plug and many times just burn the plug itself up sort of like how a spark plug spark jumps the gap between the electrode and the ground. I'm going to try to fix these points either by filing/sanding them back to flat and true or finding replacements just to see if this fixes

I work at sallys and I never recommend plugged in products. my coworkers and I hate our policy a lot but seeing this makes me just want to rip this product off the shelf. please know we don't want anything bad to happen to our customers. I hope you weren't hurt :(
