Tesla FSD Beta V10.0: A Work In Progress

I had an unplanned opportunity to take a ride in a Tesla Model Y with FSD Beta V10.0 (which just became available a couple of days ago).

I rented a 2021 Tesla Model S Long Range on Turo for a 0-100% Supercharging recording and when I returned the vehicle, the owner asked me if I wanted to go for a spin and see how FSD Beta works - so, of course, I did.

Had I knew I was going to be doing this I would have had better recording equipment on hand, but since this wasn't planned, I had to use my cellphone and hold it while recording.

I was definitely impressed with FSD's ability to perform some of the tasks, but as you'll see in the video, the system made quite a few mistakes and wasn't as smooth in lane-changing as I would expect.

Notable timestamps:
0:00 Intro
1:45 We begin the ride
2:25 FSD negotiates a difficult left turn
3:40 We turn into the right lane a little more abruptly than I would like to see
4:34 FSD identifies the right lane is closed and merges into the left lane
7:00 We change the destination so we need to make more turns
11:02 The car refuses to accelerate from a traffic light once it turns green.
11:20 The car brakes hard for a green light and then proceeds through it.
11:40 The car won't enter the left turn lane as it should have. Driver needed to intervene
17:22 The car makes a sudden right turn startling Robert and me.
18:55 The car tries unsuccessfully to fully enter the left turn lane.
22:51 Wrapup

Share the joy. Recently driving FSD (not beta) in 2 lane busy downtown. Jaywalker crossing the street from the left. I couldn’t see him but the car did and slowed so I could finish braking and the jaywalker finished crossing.

Great video Tom. Very balanced and and critical where needed. This is why you are one of the most trusted of the EV experts out there.

Good quick video, Tom. I find Tesla's FSD to be fantastically impressive... and ultimately impractical for most people, at least in anything like the condition it is in today. I understand why people are excited to try it. As I said, it is impressive technology. Geeks like us are drawn to that stuff. The general public though? I just don't see it.

Since getting a LR in 4-6 weeks, I’m anxious to see results of your LR battery test 😀

I was waiting for this, very quick editing on your part. Thank you!

I mostly agree with you Tom EXCEPT for the part where you said we're many many years away from letting the car take you to work without you having to babysit it. At the speed that Tesla is processing all this data and tweaking the system I'd say that it wouldnt take past 2025 (3 years) before we all have Level 5 autonomy. Now Technology able to yes! As long as the Politician and NTSA don't create more road blocks. Just my opinion.

At 19:00 into the video Tom Claims that the car made a bad move, but from what I see the car did exactly what it should have done. The car entered the left turning lane when it reached the turning lane entrance. It is illegal to enter the lane before the entrance.

Thank you Roberto. I think we saw most of the limitations and you’re wise enough to be nursing it along. Be safe and thank you for your kindness. Great work Tom‼️ Maybe the thought behind putting it in the hands of non-engineers is you’ll get a true feedback from those that are somewhat in touch but certainly from a random amount of backgrounds to reveal its weakness and strength as it monitors the driving habits of those involved in the testing. Guinea pigs may be what some call them but it seems like they’re willing participants for the non-Youtubers out there that are just excited to try new ventures. As long as they continue to catch it making mistakes then they will be continually reminded that it cannot be trusted. Maybe the most dangerous days are ahead when it is executing far above 95% of the time and they’re lulled in to complacency or trust of it. 🤔

Hope I get my beta soon. I travel rural Texas farm roads for work (88 mile round trip). I get lots of flashing traffic light warning signs or flashing yellow above a high speed intersection a lot where my Tesla brakes hard thinking they’re red lights. I get the “hit brake now” symbol pop up from time to time as I hold my foot on the gas knowing it will slam on brakes at these flashing yellows. I want to send that data to Tesla so they can have these cars realize those aren’t red lights for the AI. I feel there’s lots of limitations to these as long as there’s many manual drivers driving around you

Good demo... it showed how impressive it is but also how scary it is to use...

Hey Tom. This is out of topic. But I have a question related to the model Y. I also live in NJ. I took the model Y LR for a test drive recently. I love the car. Everything was goin great until I got to a few bumps on the road. I did not know what to think. I drove over the same bumps a few times. I really got a little depressed. I was going to order one. But now I
not sure. I don't want to spend over $55, 000.00 and not be happy. I've watched every vlogger on you tube and red everything about the tesla model Y. It seams to me that there is no one that can compete with Tesla. Even dough I probably seldom will use the Tesla charging network. There is no one that really can compete. I would hope that Tesla do something about the suspension. Right now, my model Y is on hold!

Why would you expect an automated system to "act natural"? Great video, can't wait till they fully merge the freeway and surface street capabilities.

7:57 The system is smarter than people. Person in the SUV was braking for nothing.

It seems like each release is getting better. These machine learning super computers that will becoming on line should accelerate its abilities. Can’t wait till it gets there

Very good demonstration. Tom, if you were taking a road trip next week, would you spend the $200 for FSD? But bear in mind, what you will get is FSD less capable than Roberto’s improved beta version. I wonder if Tesla gives subscribers version 10.1 when beta testers have the next version, ie, 10.2. Probably not.

i don't think you were using the patch 10.0.1 that was released all of a sudden. They fixed quite a few of those jerks. Definitely hope they keep pushing this tech. i suspect the next 2-3 patches are going to be really good.

With both the left turn and just before the u-turn it seems like FSD doesn't like crossing the yellow line to get into the turn lane.
