The little boy in the beginning is the same boy who is the man who is named Bernard, a Warlock Detective. The black cat is named Sanford who is his familiar. A Familiar is a spiritual guardian/spiritual companion who assist witches or also warlocks and wizards. Sanford came to Bernard at a very young age of desperation and has stayed with him ever since for about 80 years. Bernard or Mister Salvs is 90 years old in human years but physically is in his mid-twenties, in the story witches/wizards/and warlocks age differently when they start to practice magic, aging slower to 3.5 years, so every 3.5 years, their physical appearance ages one human year.
