Doug did a good job of describing the awakening process that happens to school kids. I'm not sure what set off my interest in the Civil War as a kid (it might have been my earlier interest in Lincoln), but I think the Confederama in Chattanooga may have had something to do with it. Whatever it was, it led to library books, which were like magic to me back then.

Thanks Doug, great job. i was living in Kenosha when the museum was being built and I was thrilled beyond belief. But, my job took me elsewhere and I was somewhat crestfallen, at least when it comes to being able to often visit the museum...though I've been able to find my way there dozens of times over the last 14 years. I highly recommend a visit to the museum if you're a Civil War enthusiast, a history buff, or just interested in the Midwest in general.

Model Soldiers started my interest in Military History. Some were from the "Wars of the Roses", also had some Civil War ones, from that watched Films, stuck my nose in books then war gaming and decades later still interested. I guess Books are the key thing though, once you start reading, and reading primary source material if that interests you then you've a good chance of becoming a Historian.
