Sodium ion batteries: Yet another innovation poised to be dominated by China

The burgeoning sodium ion battery industry is poised for a big year, says one analyst, but the US could be missing out as China passes America by in another area of technological development.

Shazan Siddiqi, senior technology analyst at IDTechEx, who recently wrote a report on the sodium ion battery (SiB) market, told The Register's Brandon Vigliarolo that next-generation SiBs that improve on limited life cycles and higher energy density are on their way to market - but not in the west.

As we need 1000s of GWHrs of battery storage on the worlds national grids to smooth out intermittent "green energies", a new cheaper and more reliable battery storage technology is desperately needed. The problem is governments are not thinking much about this at the moment because of the potential huge cost.

Natron Energy has mass manufacture of industrial scale sodium-ion batteries in the US. They are actually leading the world in the manufacture of these batteries. Don't say that out loud though... ;)
