Based on a chapter from Bram Stoker's Dracula, The Last Voyage of the Demeter follows the damned crew of a ship that unknowingly bring the killer vamp to London. You can guess how things turns out. We're breaking down the story, how it ties directly to the original book, as well as explaining the ending and sequel setup.

Minor correction: book Dracula has no "true love". He's just evil. He goes to London because he considers it the center of the (then) modern world. And I personally found the book parts of the Demeter story rather creepy. Not much to say about the creature design. I think you have to have monstrous Dracula here. Suave human seeming Dracula snack <sic> attacking crewmen would just be silly. All in all though, I'm glad they at least attempted this. It's a neat idea and does something new with existing material.

I’m just writing this within the first three minutes of the video maybe it’s addressed later on. But I think it makes sense for Dracula to be in this inhuman demon form on the Demeter. He doesn’t have to be the charismatic ladies man that he pretends to be on a boat full of sailors that he can feed on the fear of. He can let loose as they say

I honestly really liked Dracula in this movie. He’s conserving energy on the journey, so it makes sense that he would have a more “true” vampiric form. Plus, I like monstrous vamps, instead of Hollywood pretty boys they like to make

9:09 - it's actually in the book. When Jonathan Harker goes to his castle in the beginning (before the Demeter ride), it's revealed that Dracula learned English for his upcoming move to England.

( I don't know where he got the 'true love' or whatever he talked about in the beginning )

the oddest thing about the sunlight bit is that, in the orignal novel, sunlight never *killed* dracula--that trope originated with noseferatu. in the novel, the sunlight just slightly weakened drac but at multiple points he moves around in the sunlight. tmi he just prefers walking around at night because that's when he's stronger, plus it's harder for humans to notice that he doesn't cast a shadow

Making this section of Dracula into a standalone movie is a stroke of genius

I personally love this rendition of Dracula. There's not a lot of monstrous vampires in media and it's so refreshing to see one like this

I like the transfusion without regard for blood type bc that happens A LOT in the Dracula novel. Blood transfusion was kinda the hot new thing at the time, so Bram used it a lot in his book. The whole blood type thing is just kinda dismissed/not mentioned bc they didn't know about it. So I like that they included that lil detail, it's neat! :)

If you go back and watch the Gary oldman Dracula, yes he usually is in a more human form. But there is a scene where van helsing basically outs him and he transforms into this towering bat monster.

I would say the reason he doesn’t go a bit more human on the boat is because he doesn’t have to, he knows he’s going to kill everyone so there’s no point expending the energy to disguise himself as a human

I really liked this movie and I loved the portrayal of THE MONSTER people think of an elitist in the suit and forget that it’s a monster pretending to be human, not a human that turns into a monster

I think the reason why at the end he reappeared as a monster to Clements was on purpose, so Clements knew its him. Wouldn't make sense Dracula walking around a pub or the city in his monster form, people would notice. He did after all wore a hat, long coat and leather gloves which means he was in his human form already.

You mentioned Gary Oldman's Dracula, but he literally turned into a bat creature too

I actually enjoyed this movie much more then I thought I would.

I thought it made sense that the crew didn't figure out what seems obvious to the audience through years of stories about vampires, since they hadn't been exposed to all the vampire cliches. They're seeing it all for the first time.

The point of the movie was the story of the crew, not Dracula per se. Also, it's likely you could explain Dracula's form on the boat the product of him being surrounded by deep and swift moving water when he isn't in his grave-soil filled casket. He needs blood, but he's getting dragged over supernatural gravel to get it.

I love this film, Dracula isn't even the main point of the film. It's a great character study.

6:52 The movie may have taken some massive liabilities, but apparently the writers read enough of the book to know that even the other doctors in the book weren't concerned with blood type during transfusions.

That ending is a good way to bring in Hughe Jackman to reprise his role as Van Helsing

My head cannon for Dracula speaking is that Dracula is still learning English and thus repeats everything he hears.
