Maui fires now deadliest in US in 100 years as death toll reaches 89

I am American and I don't think I have ever heard of wildfires in Hawaii before this. I am shocked and saddened that so many lives have been lost in this. My sincere condolences to the family and friends of the victims that are left behind to deal with all this. RIP to all those who died from these wildfires. Tragic.

I live here and we lost our home on Front street in Lahaina. We are all homeless and in need of any help that we can get. Its sonterrible. We are devastated. Our whole community is lost. Please send support. There are still 1000 people missing on the west side of Maui.

Surrounded by water and pursued by fire. This an unreal nightmare.. I can't even imagine how much the dead suffered. As a survivor of the Almeda fire that burned straight through Talent, Pheonix and Medford, OR; all I can say is at least we had somewhere to run

Doubt that’s a wildfire. In a tropical place, and did that much damage in a short amount of time? No way

The Peshtigo fire was the deadliest with 1, 500 to 2, 500 deaths. It happened on October 8, 1871, the same night as the Chicago fire that claimed around 300 souls. Anyway, this is definitely the worst I have seen since the Paradise fire a few years back. I can’t imagine what kind of suffering the people in Maui are experiencing.

Growing up by a small airport I have watched 5 people burn alive in two plane crashes, this brought it all back. That is the number one worst way to leave this world. I will be making the effort to construct a "safe zone" on my forested property after this. Not sure just how or what .... but I certainly know why. I suggest every person living in potential fire threat areas take a moment and give some thought to what you would do if it happened in your location.

From what I'm hearing, most of the deaths were children. Let's see who owned the direct energy weapons destroyed Lahaina and parts of Maui

i honestly never expected the 2018 Cali paradise fires to get surpassed that quick, who would of thought the deadliest wildfire in the past 100 years would take place on an island surrounded by water? prayers to all

How could so many people die from wildfire? It’s not like an earthquake or a bomb being dropped and you got no time to run. Where’s the involvement of the government? Are they watching the whole event with a smile and can’t wait for federal fund so they can pocket them?

I am so saddened and unsettled by this. This hit close to me as I has the opportunity to visit Maui the past 2 years. The pain the locals are experiencing, I cannot fathom. My thoughts and prayers go to everyone effected.
Maui and islands will become stronger and more prepared in the future.
