An Introduction to Wardley Maps

ODeng Xiaoping once described managing the economy as crossing the river by feeling the stones—in other words have a direction but be adaptive. But in a world of constant change, how do you determine the right thing to do? Which pebble to tread on? How do you understand where you’re going and where you need to go? How do you know if your strategy is right? Is there even such a thing?

Simon Wardley examines the issue of situational awareness and explains how it applies to technology. Using examples from government and the commercial world, he explores how you can map a complex environment, identify opportunities to exploit, what techniques to use and learn to play the game.

Bio

Simon is a former CEO, former advisory board member of startups (all now acquired by US Giants), a fellow of Open Europe, inventor of Wardley Mapping, a regular conference speaker and a researcher for the Leading Edge Forum.

He uses mapping in his research for the LEF covering areas from Serverless to Nation State competition whilst also advising/teaching LEF clients on mapping, strategy, organisation and leadership.

Excellent presentation. Very interesting that you put Scrum together in the Lean area and not in the agile area. I guess there might be some that would disagree with your map there, Simon :)

Interesting... I used to work for Seacon. The original and inimitable Seacon team I worked with were in GY, UK. They started as Sea Connection Systems (which changed to Seacon (europe) - which was then bought out by TE in 2015. Interesting video, good one. lol @ set count from table.
