Bats are one of the largest orders of mammals, accounting for a quarter of the class Mammalia with more than 1,300 species.

Similar to dolphins and some bird species that live in caves, bats hunt by continuously making high-pitched sounds that are only audible to other bats. The sound waves are then reflected back when they strike an insect or other object in a process known as echolocation. In fact, bats are capable of detecting objects as thin as a human hair.

Vampire bats don't actually suck blood, despite what their name implies. Instead, they puncture a sleeping animal's skin with their razor-sharp teeth and ingest the blood as it seeps from the wound. They only need a few sips of blood daily, so the loss is little and rarely harmful to the animal.

Bats are one of the most misunderstood animals. People don't know much about them, and there are lots of unfounded superstitions about them in many cultures.
