I bought a $280 '4k gaming' PC from Amazon.com

After a viewer sent a link to a "4K gaming" PC on Amazon for $280, I just had to check it out. I also decided to try and see if I could turn it into an actual 4K gaming PC with some subtle mods.

I think by "4k" they mean 4 thousand pixels, which roughly equates to a bit above 84x47 (16:9) / 73x55 (4:3).

The fact that the advertisement says it can play 4k when the card doesn't even support native 4k it's some straight lie and a very scamy way of profiting out of people that doesn't know about this even if the card is pretty capable of playing the minsweeper to a very stable 60fps.

So my friend actually bought this thing a while back by accident instead of something else and I looked through the specs on the Amazon page for him after the fact. It says that it's a gaming pc with 4k video playback, so if you can get a movie to play in 4k then technically they're not wrong they're just predatory.

Here's the thing: If a single mom want's to buy her two boys a new computer, she will read "Gaming PC" and get a nasty surprise when they try to play Forthnight on it. Can and should we expect her to be able to tell the difference between this and a real gaming rig? No, we shouldn't. The price might give it away, but again if it says "Gaming PC" it should be spelled out exactly what experience you will get.

I actually bought the same pc from a bank headquarters that was upgrading for $100. It was like new.. The cpu is decent, so I just put a total of 16gigs of ram, a 120g ssd, and a geforce 1650 gpu in it. Kept the old psu because the gpu was low power draw. It runs excellent, great for mid range gaming. Total investment of about $300 and I'm very happy. These old office rigs are built like tanks.
