1. We're a K-12 STEM education nonprofit and our projects are intended for students. We know there are other ways you can do this (using RFID instead of reed switches, not using an Arduino at all, etc).
2. Putting the litter box on an elevated platform that the cat can jump to but the dog can't only works if your cat can actually jump higher than your dog! We have an old arthritic cat who would have trouble getting up onto a higher platform.

For anybody who is lacking the engineering skills of the amazing creator of the video, you can purchase pet doors that are auto locking. They work only with the allowed microchips or special magnet on your pets collar.

I had a high bed with heaps of space under and an older cat and new kitten. The kitten would drive the older cat crazy at times so I installed an automatic cat door in the bed, set up a space with blankets and fairy lights and food and water and had it set so only the old cat could get it. So when she needed space and time to herself she had it ❤
