Dear Maurice Sendak and Wilhelm Grimm

Dear Mili is a story written by one half of The Brother's Grimm and is one of Maurice Sendak's most sophisticated and least known works. This is a gallery of emotive and symbolic landscapes that leaves the text somewhat behind.

21:20 it's not a perspective eye render, it's an illustration of meaning constrained by geometry of the image in the paper, in the sense that when you draw things in perspective they're deformed and they lose some of that geometry in the paper itself.

Mr Sendak was an integral part of raising our daughters. However, after reading this to them just one time, we realized it was just too emotional for them. They were both hysterically crying by the end! Maurice sendak was and always will be a brilliant writer for children all over the world, but this one book brought my house down!

I love how intensely beautiful and decorative these images are while still supporting the narrative. Just letting the art *exist* in the space reserved for images. It invites the reader to linger over the pages in a way that a lot of modern illustrated texts don't.

One of my favourites also. Scared the heck out of me as a kid… in the best way!

15:10 it's extremely interesting that technique, the geometry builds the beauty of the image, but then it has detail that would be expected on a picture that's rendered like a photograph, but this image is not like that, it has no perspective and so it can gather the strength of both geometry and detail.

30:26 that tree gives two different kind of fruits, or is it that the grape vines have climbed over another tree? the way the leaves hang they look as if they are at autumn, although that may not be the original intention.

Benjamin, you should read my 1991 NYU dissertation called “An Analysis of Wilhelm Grimm’s Dear Mili Employing Von Franzian Methodological Processes.” It provides a Jungian analytical approach to the study.
