LIVE ON 'SOUNDSTAGE' (2003) - JOHN HIATT & THE GONERS

IMHO, John Hiatt has always been at his very best in the company of the 'Goners'. The bayou and swamp sound provided by the more than rock-solid rhythm section of David Ranson (bass) and Ken Blevins (drums) plus the outstanding brilliance of slide guitar ace Sonny Landreth (the 'King Of Slydeco') leaves nothing to be desired when Hiatt's songs get the special 'Goners' treatment.

In September 2003 the PBS live music programme "Soundstage" presented a rocking performance of these songs:
Paper Thin 0:00
My Baby Blue 4:35
Cry Love 9:20
Memphis In The Meantime 15:05
Thing Called Love 21:30
It hardly gets any better than that - enjoy!

Just saw John and the Goners at 2023 New Orleans Jazzfest and they played a killer set. They're a little older, a lot wiser, and still funky!! One of the two or three best sets that I saw over the two Jazzfest weekends. Rock on

Such an enormous talent! He flows effortlessly from full-blown electric to solo acoustic. Had the priveledge of seeing them inTempe a few years back. For the second set, Sonny was unbelievable and the audience, me included was In The Zone!

Memphis in the Meantime made me eat at the Rendezvous, eaten there 3 times now, I've been a fan of john Hiatt since 1988...

When John had the Goners, it was simply the very best band out there. I got to know these guys and all are terrific people all the way. They should have become multi-platinum selling and sold out huge arenas.

Thanks for posting this. Love John’s songwriting, and Sonny has my vote for greatest slide player on the planet.

And at the end, Sonny shows everyone he's a bad ass without the slide, too.

OP, I couldn't agree more with your thoughts on John and the Goners.
I first got to witness the power of these guys back in 1989 I think it was. A outdoor venue in which many of the tracks were used on his Live at Budokon album. I was front row, stage left. Fantastic show!

Hyatt's guitar players over the years: Ry Cooder, Sonny Landreth, and Mike Ward, the number 1 and 2 slide players alive, plus a guy who can shred and then play something tasteful in the next moment.Great songwriters attract the best musicians.
