Yes, you read right. Super Play Magazine. The Independent Super Nintendo Magazine for the UK which ran between 1992 and 1996 has landed back on our shores, albeit in a one off special to celebrate the SNES Mini in style. Bundled along with Retro Gamer (load 172), this is actually quite a nice one off, which re-reviews each game on the console once again (as well as reviewing Star Fox 2 for the first time). Join me for a quick exploratory peek at what's inside.

I LOVED Super Play when I was a kid. I had a bunch of them. The magazine was a revelation. The artwork, the quality of the reviews, the style of writing. I seem to remember them having quirky features and so on too.

Was a nice surprise to get this in my subscription... I audibly gasped.

Loved the magazine when I was younger, and have around a 75% complete collection now. Oddly enough, a few days ago I was talking to someone about how I still recall the disappointment I felt as a child after finding out my latest copy of SP would be the last one ever. I still have that exact copy, so it genuinely made my day when this turned up out of the blue.

Super Play was such a great mag. It was a massive influence me as a kid and I still have a few hold issues in the loft somewhere. Just picked up this issue and my god did the memories come flooding back. It even smelt like to old magazine. Good stuff.

By far my favourite magazine back in the day. Picked this up and drooled over the artwork and loved how it truly felt like a mag by fans for fans.

I was a Sega kid back in the day too, but I occasionally picked up Super Play back in the day for a nosey. SP was where I first properly learned about that whole new-fangled 'anime' stuff coming out of Japan, back when Manga Video and its bomb-ass Celtic Frost-laden trailers were a thing.

One of my favourite mags, along with Your Sinclair, C&VG, Mean Machines and Edge! I once had hundreds of vintage mags that I had kept, binned the lot, wish I had kept a few of the most important issues

I still have all my copies of super play from back in the day. Waiting for the post man to deliver the next month issue was very exciting back then. Best gaming magazine ever! This will be a nice bookend to that era! 😍

Issue 47 of Super Play, ‘Sayonara’ on the magazine spine. We didn’t see it coming. It represented a final chapter for me, not just the magazine, but the end of 16bit gaming, the end of going college, saying goodbye to friends who I’d never see again.
I do remember it like it was yesterday, coming out of the newsagents on a beautiful sunny day and glancing at the editorial. It was all over. It was far, far more than just a final issue of a magazine, it truly was the end of an era.

It feels nice when companies give us the nostalgic nods that we yearn for. There is nothing wrong with nostalgia. It is remembering some of the happiest times in our youth, when our world was exciting and new for us.

Super play then n64 magazine were superb. Snes mini is preordered, day off work arranged and plan to sit and play it all day...truly the golden age.

Thanks for the recommendation. I picked up a copy at my local train station on the way to work. So happy to see Super Play again.

I loved SuperPlay too. I still remember buying the first issue and everyone up to about end of 1995; where the world of PC Gaming took over. Thanks for posting this 👍🏼

I was well surprised when I saw this the other day when RG came through the door. I've still got the entire set of original mags so it's going into the collection :)
