In April 2017 I left Australia for a solo trip around the world on a BMW F800GS. I named it “Are We There Yet” because I don't know my final destination or the duration of this journey.

None of that would be possible without my official sponsors:
Motorcycle Diaries
Rev'it
Bridgestone
Forma
Outback Motortek
Lone Rider
Quad Lock
Leatt

VIDEO RECORDING DATE: JULY 2023

Welcome to my home state! So here’s a bit of info about the Top of the World Highway. The reason the asphalt from the Alaska Highway to Chicken is cracked and broken (like most of the other paved roads in Alaska) is because of frost heaving. That’s the ground rising and settling from the heat/freeze cycles. For that reason and because of mining operations from Chicken to the “million dollar highway” is still dirt. On the Canadian side, they tend to use a lot of Calcium Chloride on the dirt to bind the road surface to keep it firm. Alaska does too on dirt roads that have heavy traffic. It’s much easier to maintain dirt roads and far cheaper than paved roads where frost heaving occurs. There’s also a lot of glacial dust in northern dirt that is very fine. When wet (especially when calcium chloride is first applied) the road surface becomes very slippery! Worse is that calcium and dirt mix sticks to everything and is nearly impossible to clean off!

Another VLOG filled with beauty and fun! Even Chilie covered in mud was gorgeous! I have been reading and enjoying your BLOGS which are filled with fascinating back stage drama and information. Watch the Vlog then read the Blog and you have the whole adventure! Well written, entertaining, informative, just like your Vlogs! Stay safe, Kinga!

Top of the World Highway was definitely a high point for my trip last year. The cracks/condition of the paved portion after Chicken appears to have gotten even worse! It is so nice seeing another perspective on the roads I enjoyed.

Loved the Top of the World highway when I rode up to Alaska in 2017. The "Dempster Highway Dust" will not fall off! It is Calcium Chloride sprayed on the roads to keep the dust down, CaCl i sthe main component is cement so Chillie is now coated in cement! Hope you find a good, hot pressure washer in Fairbanks!

Kinga, drapanie reflektorów i kierunkowskazów aż mnie zabolało!
Tam nie ma myjni, albo chociaż szlaucha na stacji? Aż czułem fizyczny ból podrapania 😮
Biedna Chilli…

Kinga they build the roads on the tops of the mountains we’re possible because it can be 20 or 30 degrees warmer in the winter on top you probably noticed the same idea on the Demeter hwy which I ran for many years trucking to Inuvik and beyond have fun up in Alaska

Oh Poo!
Yes Miss Kinga I am still in Love with you!
During my time in Alaska I never did get used to what the winter ice heaves could do to a road.
Gorgeous views and a wonderful ride that i for one am grateful for you sharing with us. Way back when I was in elementary school America was going to convert to the metric system. Well, I guess we know how that turned out, I have tape measures in my shop that read both. Neither of which I need to know your hair looks fabulous!
I've no idea where you will be spending your holidays but i do wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Healthy Happy New Year.
With Love and Respect, You are in my prayers
Hoka Hey

That damage to the road is probably caused by ground frost... Big thanks for another awesome video!!

Good advice for someone following in your footstep.

After a particularly warm thaw, Canada's most northern railway was in jeopardy of abandonment. It serves communities along the way and also a grain port at Hudson's Bay.

the streak in the road comes from water under the asphalt that freezes and expands in winter. Same problem in Norway. Merry Christmas from Norway
